Title: Who is your favorite Villain?
Post by: Superdreuzel on June 14, 2011, 04:34:55 PM
So, who is yours?

Mine is Badrang the Tyrant. His name is simply epic! Tobe honest, they all have awesome names, but Badrang is a special thing :D Long live stoats!

But my favorite villain would have to be Skalrag.  :D :D

Slagar, definitely. He has the best backstory ever, besides being one of the most evil of all the Redwall villains.  (He enslaved all the wittle mousebabes!)  I'm ashamed to say that my opinion of him has also been improved largely by the amazing Project SLAGAR website.  You should go check it out; I put the link for it on the "Websites" discussion tab.

Ungatt Trunn. He conquered and held Salamandastron!

Have a few:
Cluny (orginal, scary), the Sable Queen (so evil), the wolverine dude from Rackety Tam (really evil), Rizzid Wearat.

But my favorite is Mad Eyes.

Feragho is possibly my favorite.
-Killed Urthstripe's parents and then tried to take over his mountain.
-Went on a one-on-one battle with a badger lord (despite being a weasel). Although he did get his horde to assist him afterwards he wasn't even fatally injured. In fact, after the horde came in, it was Urthstripe who was fatally injured.
-Breached Salamandastron, a military fortress (plus there were proper warriors there, not just old ones like in lord brocktree)
-Him and his horde were responsible for killing 5 named "good" characters.
-Was never insane or even panicking/cowardly like almost all other villains (except calling in his horde when he was losing the fight with Urthstripe but that's more reasonable than cowardly)
-Him cheating in the fight proved that he disregarded tradition (was open-minded)
Even Urthstripe expected him to not cheat like that.
-Had the largest horde in the series (besides Ungatt Trunn)
-Unlike Trunn, didn't make stupid mistakes such as fighting one on one and only relying
on one searat who is skilled with a bow.
-Turned Salamandastron into a bit of a tragedy.
Vilu Daskar would have been my favorite but he was only in book 2 of Legend of Luke (which is why I'm writing a  fanfic version where he is in all three books.

What's wrong with an insane villain? They add spice to the plot. Gabool is my favorite because
A. He never really kills someone good
B. He's smart even when he's insane
C. He looks like a villain
D. He's a searat, the best villain's in all redwall books!
Title: Re: Who is your favorite Villain?
Post by: daskar666 on June 17, 2011, 11:16:43 PM
A bit of insanity is nice but not complete schizophrenia and paranoia like Gabool had. Slagar's insanity made him better as a villain, in Gabool's case it made him look like a bit of a coward.

The Marlfoxes. Dunno why, they just are. Possibly because they mostly ended up killing each other and fighting amongst themselves, which was completely stupid and redundant and made me laugh.

I also love the searat/corsair from the Bellmaker. Blaggut. Mostly because he really sucked at being bad, and turned out to be a total softie :)

The snakes are scary. Asmodes, Baliss, both gave me goosebumps. One night I had read about Baliss and the next morning I saw a snake in my bed. "Oh on! this is the end!" I thought. But it was my cat's tail. I almost fainted of foolishness.

IMO Blaggut wasn't a villain. Neither was Clogg.

Zassaliss and his siblings. They gave me goosebumps, shivers, startles and overall total intense concentartion on what I was reading. Those three were brilliant, Jacques did awesome on them.

Actually, I gotta throw my lot in with Zassaliss and Co., too. Whenever I read the bits where they were stalking creatures, it actually got to me. Scary books don't usually scare me, so I must agree with how impressive Jacques's respresentation of those three was. Chilling.

Really hard...all villains were evil one way or another, but a few were more evil than others.  Cluny (using blackmail is really low, yet smart), Vilaya was scary (the poison dagger...), Tsarmina was the only one who met Martin in single combat (pretty darn rare), but I have to say my personal favorite would be Swartt Sixclaw from The Outcast, he is such a conniving ferret.

Three of my favorite villains, in mostly-randomized order:

Ferahgo the Assassin
In terms of lifespan, Ferahgo is one of the oldest and most experienced villains in the saga. At the beginning of Salamandastron, he was a mature weasel; by the time the story starts, Urthstripe (who was but a babe at the beginning) is a mature Badger Lord, so Ferahgo has obviously seen many seasons by this point.

As he mentions, he was skinning and killing before any of his horde was weaned. In terms of battle tactics, he's second only to Cluny in competence; he clearly knows how to control a horde. He is also unusually ruthless; Urthstripe clearly expected Ferahgo to honor the tradition of the "Duel of Chieftains", but the Assassin never had any intention of doing any such thing. From the very beginning he planned to assassinate the badger by ambush. (And frankly, that's just plain common sense -- in a fight between a Badger Lord and practically any other character in the series, I know who I'd bet on. If I was a vermin leader, I'd have to be stupid and insane to really intentionally risk my life in such an unbalanced fight.)

Several interesting personality traits include his sophistication, malicious faux naîveté and charm, and most intriguingly, his relationship with his son Klitch. Like Veil, Klitch is the spitting image of his father; unlike Veil, Ferahgo and his son actually seem to have a strong relationship, as far as vermin go. While they're constantly taking verbal shots at each other, we see from their behavior that they wouldn't really harm one another, and that's really pretty interesting (and probably unique among vermin families).

Ferahgo is notably one of the few villains that never goes insane or suffers from some sort of personality disorder. His goal, to conquer Salamandastron, is well-defined and pursued from the beginning, and doesn't slide off course. All these things should give him a special place in the ranks of Redwall villains.

Tsarmina Greeneyes
The first and in my mind, greatest wildcat villain, Tsarmina showed that a villain can be lady-like and yet dangerous and evil at the same time. ;)

Tsarmina is very definitely a girl, and that plays into her entire system of tyranny. She bosses around her subordinates, like every other main villain, but she has a very "catty" and manipulative way of handling things. Her rule begins with the classic underhanded coup, by poisoning her father. She disposes of her only significant rival, Bane, by a surprisingly non-confrontational maneuver -- she sweet-talks him, with a fake, yet seemingly sincere apology, and tricks into wearing the pine marten Ashleg's cloak. Having done that, she then locks him outside the gate, so that Argulor, the golden eagle who longs to taste pine marten, will swoop down on the fox and kill him.

Lady Greeneyes, unfortunately for her, is subject to multiple mental disorders. First, she suffers from intense aqua/hydrophobia, a paralyzing fear of water that pervades into her subconscious mind. She has little or no control over her behavior; when exposed to a river, the normally dominant queen panics and begs her troops to pull her out of the water. Alone in her chamber at nights, she's driven to insomnia by her fear. This grows worse and worse as the story continues, finally culminating in her death by drowning at the end of her fight with Martin.

Just as notably, she becomes completely obsessed with her brother Gingivere, and the role she imagines he's playing in overthrowing her rule. This extends itself to outright delusions, such as believing that various other creatures are Gingivere (even when they are obviously could not be, due to their smaller size).

In spite of all this, Tsarmina is a dangerous warrior, due to her natural, built-in weapons, and her skill at archery. In combat she practically tears Martin apart. This wildcat lady's only significant weakness is herself, and the threats conjured up by her fevered mind. Bella of Brockhall believed that defeating Tsarmina and her Thousand Eyes Army necessitated bringing back Boar the Fighter, the most dangerous warrior in Redwall history, from Salamandastron, and that speaks volumes as to the threat she posed to the Corim.

Cluny the Scourge
Cluny's infamous reign of terror took him far and wide. The greatest vermin warlord of all time had killed countless creatures prior to Redwall; his name was legendary even in a remote a place as Redwall Abbey.

A born conqueror, Cluny's strategic genius and physical might, as a whole, are unmatched by any other villain in the series. All of his plans mirror real, historic battlefield tactics, and leave little to be desired in terms of innovation. His physical skill and power is great, with a victory over a pike to his credit (something that the water rat Gloomer failed to achieve). He rapidly overwhelms Matthias, in spite of possessing inferior weaponry and armor, just by virtue of being so fast, strong, and tough.

His mental disorders seem to be brought on by the equivalent of a haunting -- it was something that the warlord had clearly never experienced before, and that couldn't be reasonably attributed to a flaw in the rat's mental makeup. It's worth noting that even when dealing with the aftereffects of these nightmares, that the Scourge remains a competent and capable villain, giving out effective orders to his troops.

No complaints to be had here; if you've read Redwall you should know it all. Cluny the Scourge is one of the greatest villains, not only in Redwall but in modern literature.

Intend to post about three more of my favorites, Ublaz Mad Eyes, Gabool the Wild, and Swartt Sixclaw when I get the chance, but right now this post is really long, and it's getting late, so I'll leave it be for now. Night.

My favoruite villain would be Slagar the Cruel or Chickenhound witch ever you prefer. I think he had one of the most sensible plans especially since he saw Cluny try and fail in a takeover of redwall his goal was simple pure revenge on the place he believed had wronged him greatly. I also like the fact that he is the only villain to appear in more than one book alive and breathing.

Liked him when he was slagar, hated him when he was chickenhound.  And no he is not the only villain to appear in more than one book.  the Painted ones are villains that appear in more than one book.  but slagar is the only singular mastermind villain to appear alive in more than one book.

Concerning the painted ones, it would be inaccurate to say that they are the same characters, simply they are the same type of tribe.
(I wouldn't even call them the same tribe because the ones in Long Patrol lived in a different place than the ones in Mattimeo)
Searats and corsairs fall into the same category (same with Flitchaye and the toad tribes)

Blaggut! He's awesome! Rasconza, and Cluny the Scourge also. I absolutely LOVE rats! It kinda bugs me that with like, one exception, all the rats in the Redwall books were evil. I mean, come on, I love the Redwall books sooooo much, but it's kind of stereotypical to label rats as always having to be evil.

Don't think of them being evil because they're rats, but rather they're rats because they're evil. I can't for the life of me remember where I read that quote... :(

On that subject, the flower queen (or whatever that hedgehog lady called herself) from Doomwyte was certainly an... interesting villain.

While Slagar was certainly the only villain to have been a character in multiple books, the searat Ripfang presents an....interesting case.
Although Brian Jacques had himself confirmed that Lord Brocktree's Ripfang=/=Mossflower's Ripfang it's pretty clear that he originally meant for them to be one and the same, and only realized a flaw with it after Lord Brocktree was published.
Additionally when Luke comes back to the region of his caves on the Goreleech in Legend of Luke, Vilu Daskar seems to have been EXPECTING the caves to be empty. Could it be possible that at some point in the story he made some sort of deal with Ripfang (the one in Mossflower) to raid the caves? Timballisto was, after all, found on Ripfang's ship.

Ruggan Bor from "Taggerung". He doesn't show up until near the end, but he leaves such an impression that he easily overshadowed the other vermin for me. Piercing stare, cautious, and not easily fooled. And quite handsome too.

There's also Gulo from "Rakkety Tam" for, yes, his cannibalistic behavior which makes him scary. But then I saw Razzid Wearat in "The Rogue Crew" and changed my mind. Razzid can be very scary.

The duo of Badrang and Clogg was great, both from "Martin the Warrior". It was great to try to take sides, and Badrang is undeniably good-looking in the cartoon. However, I misread Clogg's description at first and imagined him as a stoat version of Captain Jack Sparrow (kinda like how he looks on the Russian cover for the book). Which made both villains look great.

Honorable mention to Slagar from "Mattimeo". Partly because he's a fox, but mostly because of his portrayal (and voice acting) in the cartoon. I know Cluny's pretty much the perfect villain since he formed the expectations to follow, but Slagar as a villain is just more fun.

Yeah, Ruggan Bor was intimidating, but controlled and didn't show his emotions, which made him less vulnerable

I think the best villian of all time was Cluny the Scourge. He actually got inside the grounds and conquered Redwall. He would have won, too, if it weren't for all those Sparra and shrews coming with Matthias.

Surprised I haven't responded to this topic before.

Cluny is the answer.  He is the only one who managed to successfully infiltrate Redwall and hold captives, and for a time, you wondered whether or not Matthias or the Abbot would live.  You didn't get that with other villains who were not able to do so much as Cluny managed to.

Yeah. Cluny, Slagar, and Razzid. Although Badredd's lot got into Redwall as well, so technically there are four groups that made it inside.

I might mention, if we're on the subject of which villains entered Redwall, that General Ironbeak's army managed it too (although it was a lot easier for them, since they could ignore the walls), so that's actually six groups. ;)

Title: Re: Who is your favorite Villain?

But the only MAIN villains were Cluny Slagar and Razzid.
Others were all minor.
The mook in Sable Quean and Zwilt the Shade got in as well but they weren't main villains.
Title: Re: Who is your favorite Villain?
Post by: James Gryphon on August 17, 2011, 06:41:57 PM
Well, I'd still say that Slagar does count as a main villain; without his plot, nothing that happened would have happened. It isn't like Malkariss was planning on conquering Redwall, after all, and 90% of the action is focused on the fox.

Likewise, I think that most would consider the Marlfoxes, as a group, to be the main villains, not just Mokkan, but I'd say that it still counts regardless since he was in command of the group at the time they broke into Redwall.
Title: Re: Who is your favorite Villain?
Post by: daskar666 on August 17, 2011, 07:12:59 PM
I agree that Slagar is a main villain, which is why he is the second of the three main villains to enter.
Regarding the Marlfoxes, personally I view the rest of them as minor villains, in the same way that I view Ironbeak, Graypatch, etc as minor.

I agree. But I also agree with Slagar the Cruel. What's with all of the different colored foxes? The Marlfoxes are all mottles and can blend into things, so that makes them creepy and mysterious. The Ruggan Bor had GOLDEN fur, so he's considered intimidating. I would laugh if I met a golden fox. Then Plugg Firetail. What's with him? He's silver coloured, with a normal looking tail. Talk about weird. And since when would a vermin bath, brush, and shine his tail? Talk about a completely non-vermin way of acting. ::) Ascrod, Slagar, and Skalrag were the only sane foxes in the Redwall world.
Title: Re: Who is your favorite Villain?
Post by: James Gryphon on August 30, 2011, 06:48:40 PM
I'd contest that myself, though I never read the particular "Ask Slagar" feature you're talking about.

I'd rank Balefur pretty highly myself, though, on the fox list; he was the only one of Swartt's enemies that didn't fall for the poisoned goblet, and he posed the ferret warlord a substantial threat, up until Nightshade tricked him into entering the Quarry. That still isn't too bad, though. He could've died in a really weak way, like, say, being used for target practice, or running into an open well. ;)

The most successful fox, though, might be Groddil; he's the only fox villain I can think of that survived all the way through the book and lived to tell about it, which isn't shabby.

I've always held a fondness for Urgan Nagru for the reason that for all intents and purposes, he won. That is to say, by the time we start the story, he's already got control of a kingdom with a minimum amount of trouble and hassle. That was his intital goal, and he obtained it. Housekeeping issues of course come up later, but all major villains encounter that. It can be believed that he was in control of Southsward for sometime, giving him, I think, the longest reign post-conquer of all the major villains in the series (with the exception of Tsarmina, who inherited her kingdom. And even then, her own time on the throne is kept short). Also, his relationship with Silvamord is cool; you don't really see too many power couples, with usually one dicator ceasing control for themselves, so sharing the decision making was a neat step.

And, as a student of history, I really like how he holds his own in an open field battle. Most of the warlords resort to seiges, which, as we've seen, most mindless cannibals are capable of doing with some success. Urgan's refusal to lose his cool after being surprised, his defense of his position, and then going on the initiative to assault the enemies flanks are not somehting we get a lot of. Not to mention that, when the going gets rough, he knows enough to retreat. And retreating, in spite of popular opinion, is not cowardly so much as recognizing the fact that continuing the battle would result in assured lost and it's better to fight another day. LAst, but not least, his fight scene with Finnbarr is awesome.

Silvamord was weird. I loved the "Dystfunctional Vermin Families" Mossflower talk episode, though. It was funny how she ticked off Urgan.

I also love how in Ask Slagar, then Slagar the Cruel is making fun of Urgan. He says. "Then there's this fox who finds a dead, frozen wolf in the woods, so he wears it's pelt and calls himself Urgaan Nagru, saying 'My name's Urgan Nagru! That means I can attack you from forwards or backwards! Oooh!' I mean, come on, my name's Slagar, but that doesn't mean I will attack you from behind a slag heap shouting 'arrr'. What a dork."

Or something along those lines.  ;D

I too, thought a lot more of Slagar before I saw his cartoon. Tehey made him look like a fox that was trying to be a clown. So idiotic!

Cluny was actually pretty scary in the cartoon, though, as was Asmodeus. Of course, I last saw the Redwall cartoon when I was ten, and I'm fourteen now, so I don't remember it that well. I'll have to watch it again to refresh my memory.  ::)

I personally liked Clogg. He was the first villian for me that was...likeable, despite his obvious evil nature.

Me too!  Clogg has something of a likeable personality, somewhat like Barranca in Pearls of Lutra.  He doesn't seem quite as bloodthirsty as some of the others, probably because while we know of his fearsome reputation we never actually see him kill anyone.  The whole Badrang/Clogg power struggle made the book quite interesting.  His crew seemed to have not only a healthy respect for him, but actually liked him a bit. (See the crew's comments when forced to join Badrang's forces.)

Personally, I wouldn't bother rewatching the shows.  I think the only good one was the version of Martin the Warrior (larrgely because of Clogg and Martin and Rose).  Redwall and Mattimeo didn't impress me at all.  I mean, my brother watched them shortly after he turned 5.  To me, Redwall should be a bit too serious and scary for a 5 year old. :P  In Redwall, I really don't like Abbot Mortimer's attitude.  He will only permit Redwall to defend itself, which eliminates their best option for defeating Cluny. >:(  He frustrated me.

Actually, several of the major sea-faring vermin took some pride in their appearance.

For instance, Gabool the Wild: while he didn't necessarily do so all the way through Mariel of Redwall, this is noted as being unusual by the sea rats who observe him -- they note that he's running around his fortress like a "tramp", which was said not to be "his way".

Also, Ublaz Mad Eyes: a retired corsair, Ublaz still obviously took very much interest in fashion and personal appearance. He spent the entire book obsessing over pearls he intended to put in his crown, after all. Nevertheless he was still a ruthless vermin leader, and at one time was a highly skilled captain.

There's also Vilu Daskar, the cowardly pirate stoat, who had similar pretensions... finally, although he isn't exactly a major villain, Zigu also took interest in style.

So that's four major, recognizable pirate leaders before Plugg Firetail that took some regard as to their hygiene and appearance at some point in time. It's more common than one would think.

Remember, though, that both Cluny the Scourge and, for that matter, General Ironbeak (and I don't think anyone would consider him a top villain ;)) did the same thing.

To make my argument for who I consider to be the best villain: I rank Cluny the Scourge at the top of all villain lists for a variety of reasons. I  haven't been able to read The Rogue Crew yet, but I have read the plot description, and, aside from all of the skill, etc. that I feel probably Cluny has the edge in, I don't think Razzid can be said to do as well against the heroes.

Yeah, Cluny I think had the most success. He pretty much conquered Redwall, and would of kept it, if not for Matthias. Ungatt Trunn did capture Salamandastron, the only villain to do so, but it was against a few old hares and an old badger

I find that I like a lot of foxes.  I didn't especially like Ruggan Boar, but I like Fortunata[Mossflower] (and the fox Mask played to kill her).  I really like Baddred.  He was awesome!!!  And I loved the Redwallers' pepper bombs!
I didn't really like Ragga Bol, though.  He was frightened of the badger (ack, what was his name?!?! >:(  ) throughout the whole book.  I like the books better where the goodbeasts are frightened of the villains....or at the very least, the bad guy isn't afraid of them.  It really doesn't make the villain seem very threatening.
I haven't read Loamhedge in a while, so someone might want to list some of Ragga's good points.

Edit:  His name was Lonna Bowstripe!  Yay!  I remembered!

Hmm well I would definately say that Groddil was more of a main vermin than Badredd as he was the chief magician and thus fairly high ranking in the horde of Ungatt Trunn and he ends up killing him in the end. Badredd led what 8 or so vermin?? In a way you could also say the Rawback then was sort of a main vermin as well. Or what about the Flaghorn (spelling) who took a third of the force of Ungatt Trunn and sailed away. With Ruggan Bor he is definitely a unique case in that he is the only vermin leader to retain control over his horde and to not engage in an enormous and bloody battle. Clogg was once the captain of a corsair ship but by the end of the book was a slave. But in terms of overall vermin and even main vermin survival that would would definitely be in Brocktree with the Blue hordes as at least 2000+ survived with the possibility of 5000+ if 2/3rds as opposed to 1/3 abandoned.
I guess the question is how do you define main vermin?? Main as in the leader of a horde or main as in a main character??

I could go on for seasons talking about my favorite villains, however that doesn't keep me from telling!

Tsarmina: My first Redwall villain, and I think if I wasn't so attracted to her character I would have never picked up the other books. Also, being raised around cats made it easier to create a mental image of her and her family while reading Mossflower .
Slagar: I really didn't care about him at first, but after thinking about it for a while I realized how much I pitied him. Evil or not, nobeast deserves to be bitten by a snake.
Gabool: He reminded me of Sheogorath from the Elder Scrolls series.
Badrang: Like Slagar except I always liked him. I kid you not I obsess over him, I'm drawing a picture of him right now AND I have a nice new fanfiction somewhere in my backpack with him in it. I didn't like the Nelvana rendition of him though. He looked like a disgruntled gray wolf and toned down the anger and made him seem less "RAARGGH I'M GOING TO THROW A TABLE AT YOU!!" and more "Oooh look at me I'm the bad guy, rawr!".
Urgan and Silvamord: Brute force and cunning? Talk about a wicked duet! ...If they liked each other, that is.

Their you have it, folks! A newcomer's list of her favorite villains.

Reason #1: Because he's a foxie. ;D
Reason #2: He's really smart.
Reason #3: He gets you feeling sorry for him. At first, he starts out as this heartless villain who gets his pleasure out of kidnapping dibbuns and selling them into slavery. After a while though, MATTIMEO SPOILER that he's really Chickenhound, and see how badly disfigured he is (in the show, anyway) you start to feel sorry for him, even though his "revenge" on Matthias is a bit extreme (I spent ten minutes explaining it to my dad while watching Mattimeo). It's the Darth Vader approach all over again. ;D

So last night I started re-reading Long Patrol...and finished it! Kind of. Have to admit...I got really impatient and decided to just skip to the parts about the villains, and just skimmed through everything else.  ;) (Don't worry, I'll go back and re-read the whole thing later.) XD

But I have to say, I found myself VERY pleasantly surprised! I remembered Damug Warfang as a pretty mediocre, kind of uninteresting villain...I honestly kind of forgot about him. Coming back to it, though...of the books I've re-read so far, I think he's one of my very favorite characters! Definitely not very competent at all, but I think that's why he was so interesting to me? I got the impression this time that he was younger than I remembered, and I found him amusingly immature and almost naive. He never really accomplished anything, didn't seem to know what he was doing, and I swear actually threw tantrums. From the beginning when he cheated in order to seize power, up to the end when he just suddenly stopped the battle he was about to win, he basically behaved like a petulant, over-confident child, and it was pretty much completely amazing. How does he not get more attention from fans? XD

Ok, I've got to say I've noticed that nobody has even mentioned Zwilt the Shade, but I have also got to say that he is awesome!
Cluny the Scourge is also really great (and he looks good!) :-*
QuoteCluny the Scourge
