Title: Animals that YOU would have put in the Redwall series
Post by: Jetthebinturong on February 18, 2014, 12:52:01 AM
There was a topic like this a while back, I think it more practical to make a new one rather than revive the old one.

^ Maybe a little TOO long...  :-\

Some of those are too obscure and specific to really work. Ya see, this is why Jacques focused on animals native to the UK.

I'd keep it simple myself.

And TC, we ALREADY had a tortoise (Rakkety Tam) and Kangaroo rats (Loamhedge)

Bears
Wolves
Raccoons
White-tailed Deer
More cats in general....
Chipmunks

But I recently did a project on Brian and his life, and you know what? He mainly focused on animals native to the UK, as someone already said.

I'm pretty sure that it's common knowledge that Brian focused on the UK but did you notice that when the characters travel to distant lands they meet different creatures? Monitor lizards are not native to the UK, nor are they native to Mossflower. They are, however, native to Sampetra which is probably based on the places where Monitors live in real life (can't be bothered to look it up). There were also times when the foreigners came to the Redwallers, Plugg Firetail was a grey fox, they are NOT native to the British Isles. Then there's Gulo, Askor and the arctic foxes, none of those are native to Britain either.

My point is those animals in my list could have migrated from distant lands or live in lands the Redwallers travel to

@JangoCoolguy: Meh, I'm kind of an animal nerd and really don't care if they're obscure. Also what does TC mean? Those things in Loamhedge were Jerboa, not Kangaroo rats

To be honest, I would've liked to see skunks more than anything else. Chipmunks would've fit well in my opinion.
Title: Re: Animals that YOU would have put in the Redwall series
Post by: MeadowR on February 19, 2014, 02:15:13 PM
I can't help wondering, would Redwall still be Redwall if it kept introducing yet more animals that have come from any old country? I quite respect that Brian kept some limit. :)

I think as long as the animal doesn't get too large, like larger than a wolf, then any could fit in to the world. That's a big list there... so I'll just nod and say a lot of them would be good. :P

A Lynx (even writing a fanfic featuring one)
A Skunk
A Possum
A Wolf
Horses or another equine (all those carts/wagons and people pull them themselves?)
An Alligator or Crocodile
An Octopus or Squid
A Chameleon (as a ninja style stealth assassin  ;) )
A Parrot
A Pig, Hog or Boar
Chickens
Cows (all that cheese and cream has to come from somewhere)
Some Sheep, Goats or Rams
Dogs
Deer or something similar
A Bear
A Tasmanian Devil (if they thought Gulo was a pain in the [behind]...)

@Jango: A long time ago, carts were pulled by hand so it's not strange that the Redwallers would pull theirs by hand. Also, greensap (I think) milk is mentioned a couple of times, I'm not sure if that's the right name but it's milk that doesn't require a cow. Quick tip, when making a list like that, use the plural forms as the transition from one to next feels a fair amount less awkward than it does when you state them in singularity.  ;)

Still sounds like a total pain.

And thanks to people bringing up the funny milk. That would explain, well...everything

I realize animal stories are always iffy about what to do with non-sentient animals--especially in the Tales of Redwall where they don't use anything from other animals as much as Hindus--but it only makes sense to use them for some things

I am surprised that unless I am mistaken no one said a Pika, I also agree with Chipmunks and I know this was in the book but I would like to have seen a few more rabbits. Perhaps a flying squirrel though I think that might have been overkill.

Yesssssss.
I would adore Fossas to be a part of redwall. They are one of my favorite animals.
I would also like Mongoose (I don't know the plural to Mongoose) to be a part of redwall.
Platypuses would be awesome to have in redwall, I would imagine them being like seals as in doesn't wear clothes and speaks strangely (an australian accent would be great) I would want them to only be in one book.

I would also like Tenrecs, Puffins, Chipmunks, Coyotes, Skunks and other weasel types like Minks or Fishers.

It has been mentioned before and I whole heatedly agree the opossums and raccoons would have made an awesome addition to the Redwall vermin roster.
Thank you for spelling Opossums correctly.

P.S. Sorry for double posting!
