The contestants will be judged in a variety of role playing techniques including, character development, dueling situations, and writing action situations.
This is going to be the best tournament yet! If you've not signed up yet please visit the sign up thread to see how its done.

One question. About how much time each day do you think it will take and how long will it last? (That was two)
@Tumbler: You will need to be able to spend about a half hour around three times a week to be able to compete.
@Mattio and Romsca: You will be able to make up everything about your character except species and gender once they are assigned to you.
@Mattio: You will be issued a very specific character reference form to fill out once you are assigned a character. It's fine to write character references now, just be aware, there is a specific form that will need to be used when you turn the reference in.

Don't worry Icei This is my first RP Tournament too. I idioticly was to late for the first two.
I was in the first one and somehow managed to place third, but I think that was the last rpg I played! Maybe I'll be motivated to get back into it after this! It's just hard for me to find time for this sort of thing...

Nope, they are being assigned from the top three choices to get as many character sin use as possible. Everyone be aware you may not get your first choice. You will get one of your choices and probably the first or second.

I'm very surprised... Female squirrel was my first choice, and three other people got it, and I didn't. o.o why are Female squirrels so popular?

Huh, interesting. In that update of who all got what, I saw that there were 3 female squirrels. Yet in the starter post, it said that there were 2 female squirrels and one male.
@Rainshadow: The info update (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?topic=3490.0) below the listing of characters states why that happened. There was an error with the assignments of characters. That's why there are 3 female squirrels and 2 female stoats.
@Ceteruler: That's just the way everything worked out. I had to try to balance things out so there are equal numbers on the pirate crew and on the cave dwelling group.
@ Everyone: There was no guarantee of getting your top choice. That's why I had everyone write three choices. ;)

Aye, there will be weather, and it will be up to you guys to decide some of that. Once the character lists go up the thread for plot discussion will open as well. There all contestants can design points in the plot. Weather, how your characters relate to each other, that sort of thing will all be on the table to you guys.

Hey! Just to let all y'all know, my main form of connection to the forum has gone from my very mobile Nook to my very stationary computer, so I may not be as active as I would like. I'll keep up, but I'll probably end up being the character with the fewest posts. (I'll be the strong silent type! ;) )

Great characters, everybody! Lots of awesomeness all in one post!
Does anyone else think it's interesting the similarities between many of our characters? For example, most of us lost our parents at a young age. I like that several people chose names with significant meanings. I realize I didn't add the meaning of mine, but Liv is a Scandinavian name meaning Protection.
@Brookskimmer: I'll probably need to make my character older based on Timballisto's age. :P (I knew I made her too young!)

Sora's sword is called Kaiho, Brook. But it doesn't really matter. Thanks for getting the character pages posted, though! I think everybody came up with great designs. Can't wait to RP!
EDIT: Hm. I'm starting to think that I made my character a bit too young. Am I allowed to change it, or is it stuck that way? Not that Sora's young age is a bad thing, but it would sort-of give the feel that she is too young and inexperienced, which is really not what I wanted her to come across as.

So much easier on a nook.....you hold down the o button and a whole bunch of options pop up. (Òóôõö?œø9)
So for the mini contest, can we enter one or the other or do we have to enter both? 'Cause I can come up with a theme song, but cannot for the life of me come up with a tag line. Actually, I did think of a tag line......however, when I looked back at the mini contest details I realized "Fight for Freedom" was one of the examples! :D

There will be a new locked thread going up later today that will tell you rules for tournament posting and how you will be judged for your posts.
Also, the stats for the character sheets will be going up today!
Oh, and clarification: You will be allowed to post up to five times per week and put two of them judged. Make the posting count. I will give you examples of how to do that later today too...

Just FYI for everyone: Your posting should show that you have been actively involved in the planning phase. If your posts are willy nilly all over the place with no depth and no description you will not fair well in the tournament.
@Brookskimmer: I just reread my character sheet just to be sure I still remembered all my character details and realized I had a typo in my shield description. I realize it's too late to fix that for the judging, but when you have time, could you change the word "target" to "targe." Funny how one little letter can change the whole meaning! :) Also, is there any chance we'll get Timballisto's character description soon? I think my character will have to be older depending on Timbal's age in order for my back story to make sense. :P
Timballisto will be up soonish, I'm going to have him be around 23 or so.

I just went through and listened to all the theme options. I decided I love two of the options, like another, am ok with another, and really don't like the last as far as my musical taste goes. I don't see how some apply to the rp, but that's me. :D
As far as the taglines go, is the second option supposed to 4 different options or is it really supposed to be one long tag line?
Each are tag lines on their own.
Oh, and please don't say which ones each of you put in, I don't want hurt feelings or misunderstandings.
Also, don't say which ones you liked or not. It's ok to do as Icefire just did without revealing which ones you felt what about.

Just to clear some things up about my character, Her name and weapon choice was inspired by a Mayan God name Xbalanque (Shiv-uh-lon-kay). Just wanted to say that, I'm not sure if I'll get reduced originality score for that or not, but I had to tell you guys, I couldn't possibly come up with a name that crazily awesome without help.

this is my first RP, but it seems like one of the challenges to this is folks being in different time zones. its hard to wait sometimes for someone to post, but then, it may be 2 am where they're at, when its only noon in my timezone, still, it's been fun. I suppose we all need to make sure and check back as much as our schedule allows so other folks aren't waiting because of the plot line in the story - I know it's been hard to work it into my schedule, and I hope I haven't kept anyone waiting too long on me. I think the story is moving along nicely though. can't wait for round 2!
Not even just time zones, but different schedules within the time zones. For example, Rainshadow, BrookSkimmer, and I are all in the same time zone, but if you look at our stats I'll bet we all have different activity times.

Lol I was up waiting at 8:00 and I didn't see Brook lock any of the topics so I waited and got on again at 9:00 (We watch a movie together every Friday so we were up late) and she still didn't lock them. I finally got on at 10:00 and waited while doing some other things on the Forum. Then I looked at a post from Icefire saying that you and her were in the same time zone which is Pacific Time (I think) and we're in Eatern time so when I got on at 10:00 it was 7:00 at your place. Ugh I can't believe I missed that.

I have decided to form a "soundtrack" for the tournament, but I really need everyone's help. We already know the overall theme song and we will soon be determining the themes for each side, but what about the individual themes? Do you have an idea for you character's theme? Please pm me! Do you need some suggestions? Please pm me and we can work through some options. Do you have ideas for a scene your character takes part in? (For example, the fixing of the sail, the spring festival, the council meeting, etc.) Please pm me. If you are interested at all, please pm me!
If you don't pm.....I might pm you anyways. You see, you all know your characters better than I do and therefore you have a much better idea about what fits your character.

Building off of what Icefire said, it's a lot of fun. We've been working on this thing kinda together (but really it's her showing me things she's already come up with ;)), and I highly encourage you taking her up on this. :)

Oh, and please prepare to be gracious with the judging results. It is done subjectively as completely and as fairly as possible. But, because of the subjection, it leaves room for judges to use their opinions and trained instincts at some points. Please don't complain or get upset during the tournament, it will spoil the mood. I know many of you are competing to win, but with competition, honor needs to be involved to keep things from getting not fun around here. This means graciously accepting victories and defeats.
Remember as well, this is supposed to be for FUN :D :D :D
It has been fun to come up with theme ideas...and just to listen to new music while searching for options! (DISCLAIMER! I do not advocate searching willy nilly on YouTube and other such sites. There is a lot of trash out there. BE CAREFUL!) I think what I'm going to do is have a different playlist for each round plus one each for the characters of each side...just so you know. :)
BTW, Judges, I don't know if this will effect my score negatively or not, so I thought I should tell you. In the post where Liv is fiddling, I actually made three Celtic Woman references. The fiddler for CW, Mairead Nesbitt, dances while she plays. One of her solos is called The Butterfly. Also, we refer to her as "The Pixie" on the CW Forum (therefore, the fictitious Pixie Panic). I don't remember creativity being on the list of things judged this round, but I thought I should tell you anyways.

I actually do, and it was something me and Ice were joking about yesterday. What if in this anti-stress RP, our tournament characters had the exact opposite personality as in the tournament? Like, Marcus would be the happiest mouse in the tribe, Nevfae would be incredibly dull and Spera would be unimaginably quiet and sad. That sort of thing. ;)
Shouldn't it be that, since she's gentle, she becomes mean? But I can't imagine all the bad guys to be good... :D

Rainshadow built on that and suggested a 2nd personality, alternate universe sort of thing in which we can make our characters act the completely opposite way from what they normally would. For example, 2p Xbalantie would probably be a very cheerful chatterbox as opposed her normal, dark, silent self. Get it?
And I'm not sure who suggested this, but somebody said that this stress-relieving, 2nd personality roleplay would have a totally random setting (like at a party or something) that is not canon to the actual roleplay.

Ok everyone, here's the deal. :D
I work at a Christian kid's camp in the east county San Diego. This week we are running our refugee camp where we see kids from all over the world who are placed with their families as refugees in a part of San Diego called City Heights. I am the program director of our camp, Indian Hills Camp, which means I make sure all the fun stuff like zip line, and hayrides, and games, and swimming happen during the day. It's a busy job for sure, especially at camps like this.
I'm telling you this because I need until this weekend to get Round 2 going. I'm sorry for the delay, but on this one I need to put all these great camper kids first. My post to start off the second round will be much better and I'll have more time to read and keep up with your posts if I wait until this weekend. My job gets a lot less busy next week!

I'm also going to have a writing contest off shoot oft he tournament starting soon. You will be able to write a six hundred word or less story involving your character from this tournament. The stories will be judged and winners will be chosen by audience participation. If you want to get writing on that for now, go for it! The actual thread for this contest will also be coming up this weekend!

Yep, anything that happened before the role play took place works for the story. :D
Because little things like clashing backstories bug me, I want to see if I have this right. So, I take it we're assuming that a) Luke sailed off about 13 seasons after the slaughter (which means Timballisto was 16, Liv was 23, and Martin was 13) and then b) Martin was captured 5 seasons later at age 18 (making Timballisto 21 and Liv 28). Finally, this rpg is set 2 seasons after that. Is this all correct? Yes, I do overthink most things this way.
My thinking is that Spera came shortly after the slaughter, so that would mean that since this is set 20 seasons after it, she would have come 3 seasons after the slaughter. Maybe 4. Yeah, I think 4 sounds better, so that she'd be 1 season old when she got there.
Ok! The next round is up! Feel free to get posting, the rules are the same as they have been. Check them if you've forgotten some of them.
We will keep things in two threads until the members of BloodSpine and Swords meet. Probably when Nevarre and Farril find Spera. I will make the new combined thread when needed.

if someone who has done this before has a minute, exactly how does one go about having a battle in an rp? It seems that it would take some co-ordination between the two characters and that they agree upon a time / date so that a huge gap of time or other posts don't break up the action. Also, it would seem that some small amount of auto-ing would be necessary, I mean, like if you post "so-and-so swings his sword at this-beast .... ", do you stop there and let them respond, or do you create a whole scene where both are clashing and dodging, etc. - perhaps as long as the final outcome is decided on ahead of time? I suppose if people PM each other ahead of time and agree somehow as to the outcome, I don't know, just guessing here - what have you all done in the past? is that the way it's usually done? Otherwise a battle could take weeks.
Just curious for some insight or feedback. All opinions welcome! :D
Well the main fighting won't be till round three.
Lets say your character takes a swing at his adversary. Then his competitor has a choise, dose the blow hit his armor, sword, shield? Dose he duck, get wounded, or will he do a counter attack?
Is that any help?
What would be pretty cool, is if you role a dice as to see the outcome of the performed action.
@Bloodgullet: Like Leatho said, one person attacks, the other decides whether or not the blow lands, etc. You might not have to worry about other people interupting the flow of a dual since it sounds like Brook is going to pair us off. Usually that means each pair gets its own thread.
aha! now it makes sense why the posts were the way they were in the completed tournament archives. great, well I'll study those and see how those folks were running it and gets some clues. I do like the idea if rolling a dice - kind of old school D&D :) or dicekinz :D .. I would't want it to spiral into some kind of thing like pokemon though, too much to keep track of. thanks for the tips!

Hello to all, here's some thoughts:
The whole point of this tournament is to help everyone with their RPing skills. We can all including me ;), improve our writing skills.
I just can't abide arguing in the tournament. The other reason I'm running this is to HAVE FUN! It is not fun for me to read bickering, raised tempers, etc. You get the point... I also don't think that is fun for anyone participating in the tournament. (If that is fun for you, I suggest you drop out right now)
I have decided judging Round 2 will begin this weekend which means Round 3 will begin towards the middle of next week.
In Round 3 I will be assigning which character duels with which. You can feel free to PM me if there are certain characters you would like to duel. If I don't hear from you I will assign them however seems the best.
When you post in these threads, and on our forum in general, try to think through what you post. Being kind and working with others does a world of good, not just on this site, but in the world in general.

I was wondering about that, but the problem is that I'm just about ready to plug (oh lol, didn't even notice that for a sec.) you with a dart, and at this range it would be REALLY hard to miss.... Maybe you put down Joey, then I put my dart away, and you charge? Otherwise we will have to get back to the big fight before finding someone to duel, and that would randomize things more.
I was actually thinking that it would make sense for Spera to attack Farril. I mean, after all, she's standing right in front of him with a dagger in her paw and all that. :P
But, then again, maybe Spera runs off after Xbalantie attacks Farril. I dunno.
It's too bad Golfar ran off so soon. I before she did I was thinking Xbalantie vs. Farril and Spera vs. Golfar. Basically, I was thinking it would be great for Spera to fight whoever had Joey. She would have had to get over her fear in order to protect the mousebabe....that's just how I see it. It doesn't really matter, though, since Golfar is somewhere else now. Maybe, Farril drops the babe and attacks Xbalantie, Spera picks up the babe and runs....into another enemy?

by the way, I hadn't planned on battling there, just trying to make the story interesting. if I'm not able to battle Skral, I wouldn't be opposed to taking on Xbalantie as they both have similar weapons, but then Plugg and Xbalantie might already be wanting to battle, so I don't want to assume anything. I wouldn't mind a battle with Spera either, although it may be a bit of a stretch just because of the difference in weapons, but, then, it's a story ... anything can happen. :)
BloodGullet, do you think we could duel? Golfar and Spera? Because I had originally thought Spera would fight Farril, but it seems that that option is taken already. The next obvious choice for a duel would be Golfar, seeing as she's already (sort of) interacted with her.

Judging is not based off of whether your character "wins" or "looses" their match. It will be judged based o the same criteria as the other rounds of this tournament.
Be creative, be interesting, show emotion, use your weapons, make this fun and exciting!

I'm thinking not many of the duels will actually end with someone "winning". Please read the posts in the second tournament to see how this is done. There are no points awarded for your character coming out on top in the duel. It is based on your writing skills. For example a character who "loses" the duel could still earn full points in the judging. It's not based off of who "wins".

I've been trying to do some back reading so I can catch up to where everyone is, not that I want to cross someone's duel, but just to see who has what weapon and where they are, etc., and the details seem to have been placed somewhere, but not in the third tournament archive. What are these contests?
Based roughly after the Survivor television show and set in the Redwall universe, these contests involve writing a story together with the other contestants. Contestants apply by writing a short scene showcasing their character, and are then selected either by judges, the audience, or a combination of both. Each week, the audience votes for their least favorite character, and the one with the most votes is eliminated from the story, usually with the writer killing off their character. Once the playing field has been narrowed to a small handful of contestants (usually about three), a winner is chosen by the audience, and the story concludes.
This is a pretty hefty contest but some of you guys could do well in it!

I know it's pretty intense when it's actually running. It usually takes about a month and a half to complete if you stay in for multiple round. Not so long if you get voted out in the first couple of weeks.
When will it officially start? (After the apps have been submitted and all)
I just have to ask.... How int the world do you guys find so much to post about!? I stress my brain just posting those little blurbs! What are you posting about!? It's almost freaky! :o
EVERYBODY!!!!! How interested are you in making a soundtrack for this rpg? Most of you have sent in character themes, but very few of you have shown interest in adding music to the rest of the story. Are any of you interested or should we just do thecharacter themes and call it good?

Whoa, I'd forgotten about that! I was so busy trying to think of stuff to post in the duel. ::) Umm... Well, we could have songs describing each of the duels as well. That'd be cool! Like, each song describes the type of battle? Haha, Spera and Hooktail would have an odd theme, probably. ;)

I'll have input. ;) More of the giving my opinion on what's opted for rather than for the music itself though.
Another idea! Would you guys like to choose a song or three for each round (or rather each thread in the round. For example, 3 songs for the spring festival and three for riding out the storm)? We could do it the same way we chose the main themes. You could all send in suggestions to me and then I could set up a poll.
Then, for the duels, the contestants in each duel can decide together what they think their duel theme should be amd send it to me.
Thoughts?

How many songs per thread can we send in?
Send me as many as you like! Just make sure you mark which thread the songs are intended for.
Oh! But don't expect any prize other than bragging rights if your songs win. I have no artistic ability, so unless someone else wishes to oblige, no prize. This is just for the fun of it. :)

I totally understand that. The only reason I hadn't brought this up again earlier is because I was too busy.
So, this isn't related to the music, but I was wondering, (and this is mostly directed towards Brook), what are we gonna be doing for the 4th round? I mean, is it gonna be sort of cleaning up after the battle or something?

I haven't read your thread Tam and Martin but killing off your character before the final round is going to make it hard for you to write in the last round. I suggest making your first post in the next thread a sort of "he actually fainted and is still sort of alive" type of deal. If not, you'll not be able to finish the tournament.
As far as the 4th round goes, I'll have a thread u probably tomorrow for planning your last round :D At that point I'll tell you what it's going to be about.
I was going to have him come back alive but I thought that the third round was the last. Maybe I or you could modify it because at first I said he was just lost to sight but since I thought there wasn't another round I made him die. Could you maybe do that?
Oh! Sorry, Tam! I thought you knew there were 4 rounds and just decided to be done like Bloodgullet or would have said something. :-\

I must say there were some beautiful posts in that round! Good work you guys. I will be making a premise for Round 4 very soon.

I'm guessing that will be the case for a lot of the American players seeing as how this is a holiday weekend.
MUSIC UPDATE!
I've had a couple people ask if there's a deadline on getting your character theme in and the answer is no, but I would prefer before the tournament ends. ;D
HOWEVER, I am going to put a deadline on the other parts of the soundtrack so that we get it done. :)
We'll go in rounds. Deadline to get in music for the first round is June 1st. I will set up a poll June 2nd.
You can still send in music for other rounds, just make sure you mark them so I don't put them in the wrong poll.
How does that sound? Is that enough time for you lot?

Whew. My heart was racing when I looked at the stats and results but when I saw that I did pretty well in the third round I was better. Good Job everyone else too!

Hi all, couldn't help popping back in to check on results. Now that I read the great stats for everyone and see the discussions, I may consider jumping back in, but not sure how to work the logic out. Should she come back form the dead, sort of sent back to complete a mission for good kind of theme, or as a spirit? I could see that happening. I think I could be up for that now that I've had time to take of other things.

Whoa, I'm actually very surprised that I got that high of a score for the duel! I thought that she was pretty much just the blubbering wounded animal in the sand, throwing random attacks at her enemy, lol. ::)

not a bad idea, but I think she's now kind of an outcast from both camps - the woodlanders look at her as part of the vermin crew, and the pirates will look on her as a deserter. So, she will have to 'transform' into something new. I think I have half of it written in my head now anyway, lots of options, but I'll see where the story takes itself.

I don't know if you thought about this, but since both sides were fighting, and you come back soon after, they might not notice you were gone.

@Bloodgullet: No, we haven't decided on round 1 yet. We have the official themes and most of the character themes (I will post that playlist as soon as I get the last few themes lined up.), but we havem't chosen any music outside of that.
Icefire: as for a round one theme, I think that "Threat from the North," (Adrian again ;)) would fit perfectly.... Also, something.... stormy...
I'm pretty sure that ones taken already, but we definitely need more stormy. Anyone know some stormy music?
I might be able to look up some music tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday. :) Hopefully I'll find some stormy music! (Haha, I'm mentally running through the music I know)

Random! So, I was looking through a notebook I'm using for fanfics and I found one I wrote as an option for the contest. It's not completely done, but I was laughing because it turns out my character had an encounter on "the other side" just like several other characters. It seems we all think alike. ;D It was set before this tournament, but I think I'll change it so it comes after so my character development still makes a little sense.
