Here's where we discuss all things Silmarillion.
I've already read the book once, and I hope to buy the hardcover illustrated edition soon.
For those who are unfamiliar with this book, it's basically the prequel to The Lord of the Rings, but in the form of a history, not a novel. It's fascinating, rather dark and violent, and a must-read.
Anyway, to start off the thread, here's two cool fan-made pics of the Valar and Maiar:

So, discuss away!
Firstly, who actually owns a copy of this book?
I own a copy, but I hardly remember any of it... ;D ;D
That I already know. ;D
I used to own a copy on my Kindle, but it (and all my other books) got deleted when I had to make a new account. :(
Why'd you have to make a new account? (You mean an Amazon account, right?)
I have it on my kindle, I think?

For some reason I wasn't able to buy books with my old account.

Cool. You should read it. Be warned: it's rather depressing in a lot of places.

Strange. Maybe you could contact Amazon support?
Anyway, who are you guys' favorite characters? Mine are Maedhros and Finrod, though there are many other awesome characters as well.
Love the images!
I have the book...actually read it for a class (and LoTR for a different class taught by the same teacher) a number of years ago and I'm slowly working my way through it again (taking a break...need lighter reading right now).
I tried reading it. . . . I couldn't. Nearly put me to sleep. Maybe I'll try again. :)

Yes, you should. It will forever change your entire view of LotR.
I might read it after I finish LotR. I'm not really sure.
I tried reading it, but reached a point where I just couldn't get farther into it, and ended up reaching the number-of-renewals limit at the library.
I've got my own copy now, found it at the used-book sale at this summer's church picnic. I'll try again at some point.
I never read it because when ever I want to read it my sister is reading it. It seems like that's all she reads.

You could borrow one from your local library or get yourself an e-copy.
I'm to lazy to do that.

It takes a few clicks if you're buying online.
My sister owns it why would I buy it?

Why don't you tell her you want to read it, then? If she's anything like me, she would be more than happy to have you read it so she'll have someone to obsess over it with.
She knows I want to read it and she already obsesses over it with anyone who will listen.

I think your sister and I would get along beautifully. ;D I'm always going on about some small and probably-inconsequential Silmarillion fact.
But seriously, tell her you really wanna read it. Not sure what other advice I can give...
Anyway, I found some Silmarillion art!
Art
(http://tolkiengateway.net/w/images/8/80/Kimberly_-_Aiwendil.jpg)
It's Aiwendil, the Maia who was sent to Middle-earth as Radagast the Brown! He's actually really cute... and so is the little hedgehog in the corner. *Dies of awesomeness overload*
(http://tolkiengateway.net/w/images/d/d5/Kimberly_-_Beren_and_Luthien.jpg)
Beren and Luthien! I don't care for the way Beren looks, but it's an awesome picture nonetheless. Luthien looks kind of like Susan Pevensie...
More art by the same person. (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Category:Images_by_Kimberly)
I don't think she has ever finished it.
^ Really? Hmm...
Anyway, I found another great Tolkien artist! http://steamey.deviantart.com/gallery/41578982/Tolkien
And then, of course, there's the fantastic Jenny Dolfen, whom I've known about for a while: http://gold-seven.deviantart.com/gallery
(http://pre02.deviantart.net/2848/th/pre/f/2013/031/6/4/silmarillion_melkor_and_annatar_by_daswhox-d5tdc8p.png)
Sauron and Melkor.
Interesting. I'm not sure I like the style, though - it's rather chaotic, and the picture itself is kind of creepy.
But the chaoticness makes you closer, and what's creepy about it?
Do you mean the chaoticness makes you LOOK closer? I'm assuming you meant that. :P
I don't know... it's something about the color choices, particularly, and Sauron's face and the chaos. A combination of things.
*Facepalm* Yes. That's what I meant.
I think the chaos fits perfectly. I can't get over the ridiculousness of Morgoth's shoulder pauldron or whatever it is. It's ridiculous.
Bump!
My copy of the Silmarillion (which I ordered with a gift card I've had for over THREE YEARS) arrived today! It's the hardcover second edition (I think), illustrated by Ted Nasmith. (Does anyone else have this edition?) Anyway, I'm super happy. ;D
Also, I'm in the process of writing an angsty AU oneshot featuring Maedhros and Maglor. (Aren't the sons of FĂ«anor such interesting characters?)
I have to share this adorable picture of Maglor with Elrond and Elros (and Maedhros in the background).
(Also, I'm scandalized that my browser's auto-spellcheck recognizes Elrond as a word but not the others!)As Little Might Be Thought, by Jenny Dolfen
(https://goldseven.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/aslittle_col.jpg?w=656)
*squees* Isn't it awesome?!
That is so adorable! I love it! :D
::)
For once Vilu...I agree with you. ;D
*gasp* HOW COULD YOU BE IMMUNE TO THE AMAZINGNESS OF THAT PAINTING?!
Quite easily as a matter of fact! ;D
We're Dwarves.
Just 'cause you're a dwarf doesn't mean you can't see the awesomeness of an awesome picture!
Dwarves don't like elves.
You can still like a picture of Elves.
I prefer the Elves more than the Dwarves, but I don't like that picture.
Why don't you like the picture?
It looks rather cheesy...
But it's Maglor being sweet and awesome to the twins while his poor brother Maedhros stands alone in the distance because he probably feels guilty about everything. How can that not be awesome?
Oh, wait. You're one of those strange lifeforms known as "boys," so you'll never understand the emotional ways of fangirls. ;D

Of course, if you had been my sisters I would have rent you asunder. ;D

Guys invented fangirling with things like
Star Wars,
Star Trek and
Indiana Jones.
Personally I'm a massive fanboy of
Skulduggery Pleasant,
Bartimaeus,
Percy Jackson and
The Shadowhunter Chronicles.

Lol. ;D
@Jet: Okay, maybe, but generally speaking it's girls who get really emotionally invested in fictional things. ;D
I would beg to differ. "Gamer" kids raging at losses is a subject which is all over YouTube.

Oh yeah right. I cried when I thought that Frodo and Sam were going to die,
Don't read if you are reading Beyond the Summerland.
and in the first book of a series when the main character died I felt very very nauseous!
Now tell me that guys don't get emotionally invested in fictional things! ;D
@Ash: I was thinking more along the lines of emotionally investing in the characters of a book or movie.
@Del: Wait, you cried?! Softy. ;D (That was when you were like eleven and you were reading the books, right?)
What book series was that?
And anyway, I said generally speaking. One or two exceptions don't nullify the generalization. ;D
It was The Binding Blade Chronicles, the book was Beyond the Summerland. And yes that was when I was eleven...I vowed to never read anymore of the Binding Blade Chronicles. And have kept that even today! So I have no idea what happens afterwards.
Lol.
I was asking if you were eleven when you cried while reading LotR. :P

Why did you do that? It seems to be a fantastic series, based on the fact that it made you show emotion. (Unless the bad writing made you cry)
@Jukka: It's still fictional and they're still emotionally invested. There are many other examples of fanboys out there, but it's early in the morning and my brain isn't functioning as well as I'd like it to.
It upset me enough, and I liked that character enough to hold a grudge against the author! ;D
