Fair enough. It's fairly easy to respond to if it's the first step, but if I say hi and then someone else responds with howdy, I can never decide whether it'd be awkward to keep the conversation going or rude to not keep it going.

When someone says "Howdy" you should just respond "Well, and you?" To confuse people that don't know that it is a contraction.

I was thinking about that. Doesn't seem like a way to make friends but they certainly won't say howdy again without remembering that.
