I have made a terrible mistake.  I have looked up species of mice, voles, and shrews living in England.

There are fairly noticable differences between some of the species, even the shrews, but the most interesting discovery was of the harvest mouse.  They're tiny little things, scarcely bigger than pygmy shrews!  It would be interesting for these guys to show up in a fanfic *hinthint*.

Another thing of note is that most of the vole species are slightly smaller than (non-harvest) mice, except for the water vole, which is the size of a black rat!

There are also two very different species of rats, the black rat and the brown rat.  The brown rat is a good deal bigger than the black rat.  Black rats are in fact smaller than squirrels.  Given that another name for black rat is "ship rat", they seem a good suspect for the various corsair rats, especially in Mariel of Redwall.  Brown rats are the species that domestic rats come from.

Finally, we all overlooked dormice!  There are two species of dormouse in England, one much larger than the other.  However, the larger one is introduced, so the ones in Mossflower are probably hazel dormice.  They're slightly smaller than the "normal" mice types.  They're quite adorable, with long furry tails.  They do in fact appear in a number of the books.

As far as I can tell, black rats range from black through various tones of grey and grey-brown.  Quite a bit of variation, really.

They're both in the mustelidae family, but that's about as closely related as they are.
