It's a book series.

The official name for the series is the Inheritance Cycle. Eragon is the first book, so many people just call it Eragon when referring to the series.

Eragon was also the name of the first Rider. And somebody (Oromis? Jeod?) said that they had only heard of or known three people named Eragon.

When people talk about Eragon, they are usually referring to the main character of that series (I tried to name him in a way that differentiates him from the others, but I couldn't think of a title that wasn't a spoiler).
