That sounds so familiar... Gah, I'm going to have to search this.
*Searches*
Of course! It's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone"! It's referring to the Dursleys! I knew it sounded familiar!

"Life itself was meat. Life lived on life. There were the eaters and the eaten. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN."

Ooh ooh that's gotta be Jack London.  Call of the Wild, maybe?

"Between me and the moonlight flitted a great bat, coming and going in great, whirling circles."
"Each of us is born to follow a star, be it bright and shining or dark and fated."

Oh, that's a C.S. Lewis one... I can't remember the book. Ah, The Magician's Nephew!

"It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived."

DanielofRedwall

Close, Flandor, it was "White Fang".

Lily, yours was "To Kill a Mockingbird"!

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."
Received mostly negative reviews.

Dickens, a Tale of Two Cities :)

"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast!"

"Each of us is born to follow a star, be it bright and shining or dark and fated."

That sounds like something a Hobbit would say. ;) Am I right? Is it a Tolkien book? I'm not going to search this one, just let me know if I'm right.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Received mostly negative reviews.

Flandor

Not right yet, Daniel, but give it another go if you like.  It is an old book by a British author.

Yours was from Animal Farm, correct?
"Each of us is born to follow a star, be it bright and shining or dark and fated."

"I am a greaser.  I am a JD and a hood.  I blacken the name of our fair city.  I beat up people.  I rob gas stations.  I am a menace to society.  Man, do I have fun!"

Matilda?

You can't win. You know that, don't you? It doesn't matter if you whip us, you'll still be where you were before, at the bottom. And we'll still be the lucky ones at the top with all the breaks. It doesn't matter. Greasers will still be Greasers and Socs will still be Socs. It doesn't matter
Fun. is a fantastic band.
