it's also dumb to call NZers kiwis, because it's like if we called....*can't remember what I'm tryin' to think of...*

It's literally called a kiwi.

No, its called a kiwi fruit! it's like if you called a dragon fruit, a dragon!

She actually has a point, though not because of the dragonfruit. After all, we call strawberries strawberries despite the fact that it's a berry is obvious.

That said, I shall continue to call kiwi fruit simply kiwi.

Apple, banana, orange, cherry, etc....

Strawberries are called strawberries, and kiwis are called kiwis.  That's just their names, ya know?  You can add fruit as a descriptor if you want, but that isn't intrinsically a part of it's name.
