Wow. Lets see, Tolkien is the obvious choice, but I also enjoy R.A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, Weise & Hickman.

Living ones? Probably Brandon Mull. I also enjoy Eoin Colfer- Artemis Fowl.

I recommend James A. Owen to anyone who enjoyed Michael Scott's SotINF, they both ground their stories with one foot in the real world and the other in myth
