I LOVED it when the bell fell on Cluny. When I first read Redwall, I was really tense and I wished the whole thing would be solved, and Cluny's death just solved everything. ;D

No, Tam did not push Gulo, Gulo tripped.
A combination of tripping and being pushed, I think.  Tam was lying in the ditch almost unconscious, then Gulo jumped to kill him, and then the book said something about Tam holding up his arms and legs rigidly.  Tam managed to push Gulo over him onto the shield.

Tam's shield was knocked close to the ditch, and stuck sideways in the ground (not in the ditch, on the edge of it).  When Tam was knocked down, Gulo took his chance and leaped onto him, but Tam thrust his sword up with all four paws, the force of which threw Gulo from the blade onto Tam's shield.  He was pushed, no tripping involved.
