Balance is the key tae makin' a braw card game. Just like with any card game, a card with a really good feature needs to have something that balances it.

For an example, I'll give a quick review of a non-Redwall card called Necromancy:

After activation all of your fighters become Darkanoids, and their stats become halfed and stay that way as long as this card is on the field (and in your active zone). (If a stat is odd then you add 1 and then half.) As long as this card is face-up on the field (and in your active zone) every time one of your fighters is destroyed you must discard one card from your deck and then put the destroyed fighter back in your active zone face-up. If you cannot draw then destroy this card.

The Positive: After a fighter is destroyed it "regenerates" an' comes back to life, thus ye have an invincible force fighting for ye.

The Negative: All o' yer fighter's stats are halfed, thus they're weakened and are easier tae be destroyed. On top o' this, tae "regenerate" a card ye have tae discard a card from yer deck, thus depleting yer deck, nay tae mention tha' the discarding from yer deck is mandatory.

Sae ye may nae lose yer fighter's, but they become weakened and yer deck gets depleted. This would be a card best suited for combining with other cards, an' nay just playin' it because it saves yer fighters from destruction.  

As ye can see, tis balanced better than if the effect was:
As long as this card is on yer side o' the field yer fighters cannot be destroyed.

In a quick summary (for those tha' are still confused   ) A balanced card wid be one with a braw effect, but low stats, or a card with braw stats but an effect tha' makes it hard tae use.

What exactly do the symbols and letters on the "Redwall Abbey", "Slagar Will Win", and "Sword of Martin" cards mean?

By this, I mean the top circle (where the speed box normally is) that contains either an infinity symbol or a 1 or an E, and the box in the place where the attack/defense stats normally are, with the O or the triangle or the sword, etc.

Ah'll ztart with the Slagar Will Win, an' Sword of Martin cardz. Theze two are examplez o' Event (Slagar Will Win) an' Equipment (Sword of Martin) cardz. The triangle is fer an event card and the zword is fer an Equipment card. The infinity zymbol meanz tha' the card can be uzed more than juzt onze, and the 1 meanz tha' it can only be uzed onze before being dizcarded, unlezz the effect cawz fer zomethin' elze (like it returnin' tae yer hand or deck).

Landzcape cardz are reprezented by the "O". Az fer the "E", Inztead o' the infinity zymbol or the 1 they inztead have a certain clazz zymbol, zuch az a Dragonid or a Lightanoid, which meanz tha' the effectz o' tha' Landzcape card only affect fighterz of that clazz. The "E" is fer a Landzcape card that'z effect targetz nay a zingle clazz, but another groap, zuch az yer entire field (Redwall Abbey) or Event cardz or etc...
