Now that I'm mostly through the Redwall books I say the sadest part was Rose death. She fought for the one that she loved whats more noble then that.

RIP ROSE OF NOONVALE
IAMTHATIS MY SWORD SHALL WEILD FOR ME
RIP BRIAN JACQUES

Skyblade

With all the traumatic things that have happened throughout the 22 novels of the Redwall saga, there probably isn't just one ultimately tragic moment. Too many :'(

To me, many deaths are tragic, but ones that stand out are often those of innocent beasts. There are more occurrences, of course, but these are some that I thought of:

Mattimeo: Friar Hugo and Mrs. Bankvole

Rakkety Tam: The squirrels in the beginning of the novel that get slain and eaten by Gulo and his gang. That part made me want to throw Gulo off a cliff :P

Thanks, MatthiasMan, for the avatar!

The Skarzs

Yes. . . that part in Rakkety Tam is blood-raising.

Ah, yes, whatshisface...

Life is too short to rush through it.

The death of Piknim, and Craklyn being left without her best friend in Pearls of Lutra, was the most tragic event to happen in the Abbey.  Outside of the Abbey, I was upset by Shogg's death in Triss, especially after all he had been through.  He deserved a life of peace and freedom that he never saw.

Swiffo! His death was so sudden and unexpected, and he was such a young, carefree creature who swore by peace.  This one part did make me glad that his brother Ruggan was so bloodthirsty and gave Ketral Vane a violent death.

Scarleth' s death was horrible. I hated Nightshade for that. It was from The Outcast of Redwall.
Just pretend there is something interesting and unique written here... I have nothing to say.

James Gryphon

The most tragic moment I can think of right now is the Sparra's attack on the Longtail Horde in Mattimeo. I actually cried when I re-read it last, and I'm getting a bit teary now just thinking about it.

Eulaliaaa!

In Salamandastron, when Urthstripe died and Mara was talking to him. It makes me cry every time...
"I came back too late. Now it is past the time when I could tell you what is in my heart. I ranged far and wide to be back home here with you, and in that time I slowly understood what you tried to teach me- you who were ever true to your own code of honor and duty. To everybeast you were Urthstripe the Strong, Lord of the mountain; so will your name be always remembered. You cannot hear me now, but I wish to add one more name to your title."
The young badger maid took both the lifeless paws and places them on her bowed head as she spoke a single word:
"Father!"

When Log a Log dies in Mattimeo That and Warbeak from the same book, it's terrible that both of Matthias's closest friends perish to find his kidnapped son.

I actually thought Scragg's death was sad.
The fastest way to a man's heart- Or anyone's, in fact- Is to tear a hole through their chest.

Indeed. You are as ancient as the soot that choked Pompeii into oblivion, though not quite as uncaring. - Rusvul

The Skarzs

Scragg was in Redwall, right? I don't think it was tragic as much as it would be traumatizing for Sam and Matthias, who saw him killed.
