This is certainly one the most mysterious creatures Brian Jacques made up. Mossflower says that Verdauga captured him and brought him to Kotir. If you have any thoughts about the Gloomer, post them here

The Gloomer's a water rat, right? Haven't read Mossflower in a while...

Gloomer is some sort of rat, but when you read about what he's like, you'd almost imagine he's some sort of eel kept in the depths of Kotir.  :P  Nobody ever talked of him as a rat and with a name like Gloomer, living within the watery darkness, you think fish or something else...not some sort of mammal.

Captain Tammo

I think gloomers mini pond kind of thing was a spring, it says in the long patrol that redwall abbey was built over Kotir... And the pond is a spring :o

Nightfire

Well, it actually does say that he's a water rat, but is blind and furless from being underground in a lake for so long. My theory is that so many seasons spent in the dark turned him from a semi-intelligent vermin to a mindless monster.

I love the exciting scene between Stormfin and Gloomer. He truly is very mysterious.
Received mostly negative reviews.

One thing to note about the Gloomer is that although he was certainly extremely dangerous, he is nevertheless still only the second most dangerous rat in the series: After all, Cluny's greatest physical feat was killing a pike, whereas Gloomer is overpowered and drowned by the pike Stormfin.

That is quite incredible and scary, but bear in mind that Cluny was a huge, tough bilge rat, wereas Gloomer was a water rat, which is a species well known for being weak, skinny, and scavangers. Think of the water rats in Rakkety Tam. They were complete morons. Gloomer could just be dangerous in water rat terms, but not compared with a bilge rat like Cluny.

I just read the Gloomer part for the first time a few seconds ago! I picture him looking a bit deformed, sort of crocodile like, actually...
I'm guessin' he came from Hell itself...
I won't be on this forum much anymore, but I'll pop in to say hi every now and then.

Nightfire

I think he's just a horribly mutated and feral water rat, nothing more. You guys are making too much of this.

I wonder how he was captured by Verdauga. That would be difficult to capture the Gloomer

I think that he was only so muscular and feral because of long seasons straining against that  chain that held him fast. He was probably not THAT strong when they first caught him.

Gulo

I agree with the above that he was a feral and extremely visicous water rat kind of like the Foxwolf's two ermine the Dirgecallers. But ermine themselves as seen in Rakety Tam and some other books werent particularly skilled fighters.
