They're pretty much from the same geographical area of Central Asia, and the general description is 'a sabre with a curved blade'. Both are in the same family of swords, along with the Talwar, kilij, Pulwar, and the Turk-Mongol sabre.

'Scimitar' is thought to originate from the Persian word 'shamsh?r', which literally meant 'paw claw' due to the length and curve of the blade. Through many translations, the word became 'scimitar'. Truthfully, scimitar is the Iranian word for scimitar, as kilij is the Egyptian and Turkish word, Talwar is Pakistani, and Pulwar is from Afghanistan.

Do your research, Jet. A scimitar comes in all shapes, because it has a lot of history in a lot of different places.

My brother has been looking up swords and has found many, many designs for similar shapes of bladed objects that all have different names. For example: I'm pretty sure "falcate" is actually the Spanish word for the sword.

Hmm... I'll take a slim bladed straight sword. Nothing better for dueling, fast, excells at thrusting and the slash. Not as much power, perhaps, but if I can stab you before you get that whopper of a greatsword up for a chop...

If it were a real battle, then the person you would be fighting could probably take several stabbings because of the adrenaline.
Also, the dramatic way those greatswords and broadswords are used in movies is not historically accurate.
