Although, technically, shamshir and scimitars are practically the same thing...

Scimitar:
Shamshir:

"Understood." Will looked at Nico. "Will you be my buddy?"
"You're a dork," Nico announced.

They're pretty much from the same geographical area of Central Asia, and the general description is 'a sabre with a curved blade'. Both are in the same family of swords, along with the Talwar, kilij, Pulwar, and the Turk-Mongol sabre.

'Scimitar' is thought to originate from the Persian word 'shamsh?r', which literally meant 'paw claw' due to the length and curve of the blade. Through many translations, the word became 'scimitar'. Truthfully, scimitar is the Iranian word for scimitar, as kilij is the Egyptian and Turkish word, Talwar is Pakistani, and Pulwar is from Afghanistan.

Do your research, Jet. A scimitar comes in all shapes, because it has a lot of history in a lot of different places.

And please don't bully Star. I'd have to tan your hide.
Was anyone else on the old DAB forum, circa 2009? I was recently reminded of it, lol.

Bitterly jittery, and not very glittery.

The Skarzs

The curve of the scimitars tended to have a religious symbolism during the Middle Ages.

BlueRose

Yup. And 'scimitar' is really just a general Anglicized word for shamshir and Pulwar and kilij et cetera.

My brother has been looking up swords and has found many, many designs for similar shapes of bladed objects that all have different names. For example: I'm pretty sure "falcate" is actually the Spanish word for the sword.

BlueRose

No, falcate is Latin.

Yeah, I meant that. Really sorry, my brain is a blob. . .

Rose, you know a fair amount about weapons?
Sekai de ichiban ohimesama. ;)

BlueRose

'Course I do! My brother loves bladed weapons. He's teaching me how to fight with a katana right now.

@Skarzs: Your brain is always a blob.

The Skarzs

That's insulting.

Isn't it, though? I like blobs, however. They resemble slime creatures, and slime creatures are good for grinding if one is below level 10.

Hmm... I'll take a slim bladed straight sword. Nothing better for dueling, fast, excells at thrusting and the slash. Not as much power, perhaps, but if I can stab you before you get that whopper of a greatsword up for a chop...

"Integrity and firmness is all I can promise; these, be the voyage long or short, shall never forsake me although I may be deserted by all men."

Courage: Not only the willingness to die manfully, but also the determination to live decently.

The Skarzs

If it were a real battle, then the person you would be fighting could probably take several stabbings because of the adrenaline.
Also, the dramatic way those greatswords and broadswords are used in movies is not historically accurate.

Wylder Treejumper

Yeah, I know that! However, I'll take a dueling sword over a chopping sword any day.
