I know I'm behind on your other works and this story is rather old (but it's short and that makes it easier to read when pressed for time).
I have to agree with your (totally not pretentious- even if it sounds that way I know what it feels like to be happy with your work) review, a very broad mix of emotions here. I wouldn't say it's your best work- but only coz I haven't read all of it... Yet anyways...
The ending was rather sad- but I think that helped it in the 'long run' (it was better for the message- despite getting murdered- as a side note has anyone noticed that it's usually the Skipper's that are anti-vermin- that he still saved them (although it does seem like a kind of tragic death- Beren really didn't deserve that but hey, that's 'realism' for you isn't it?)
Will go through the Unlikiest as soon as possible.

I can relate to that too- going back and changing stuff- (although I tend to say 'dont do that's because never endlessly reworking the same stories can bog down basically anyone)
And yeah- I can tell (lots more showing rather than telling in the Unlikiest compared to here, I can probably add a detailed list but I'm not bothered ATM)
