Was anyone else on the old DAB forum, circa 2009? I was recently reminded of it, lol.

Bitterly jittery, and not very glittery.

Uh, sure. So, um, do you have a set of dice? d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4, and sometimes a d3.

Good? Good.

So the general idea is whenever someone wants to do something, they roll a d20 for it.

'I want to climb the stone brick wall!'

'Okay. Roll for it.'

The more difficult a task is, the higher the DC, or Difficulty Class. So, let's say climbing this stone brick wall is DC 12, meaning it's fairly easy but not a thing most people can do just on reflex. So if the player rolls a 12 or higher, they can climb it. Pretty simple.

It gets slightly more complicated, though.
Let's say this player is a Rogue, and they've put skill points into the Climb skill. So when they roll to climb this wall, there's several things that have to be added to their roll.

d20 + Climb skill modifier + Strength modifier + Misc modifier

Your climb skill modifier is how many points you've put into 'Climb.'
Your Strength modifier is how much of a bonus you get from your character's Strength ability.
Your Misc modifiers are basically anything else- Magic items, you party member giving you a boost up the wall. Some of them might be negative- You happen to be carrying a heavy object, for example, or you're using one of your hands to fight off a goblin. Things like that. Basically anything the DM says helps or hinders you.

In combat, it's slightly different. Instead of a task DC, you're rolling against a creature or object's AC, or Armor Class. Armor Class is how well defended something is- Either by wearing armor, or by being able to dodge attacks and such- Or some combination of the two.

AC is calculated as follows- 10 (Base) + Size modifier (If you're small, you're harder to hit) + Armor bonus + Shield bonus + Dexterity bonus

If you're rolling against someone's AC and you hit, you roll damage, which is determined by the weapon you're using. Usually, it's a d4, d6, or d8, some more powerful weapons roll multiples- If I'm not mistaken, a Greatsword rolls 2d6.

Some of the basic things about D&D, there you go.
