What's the point in having them at all if they take years to achieve?

To give people something more to strive for.

Back when we had just the original five ranks (and people became Hero Members at 500 posts), people were always asking about new ranks and saying that wasn't enough, when they had 1,000 or 3,000 or 5,000 posts.
