Title: Favourite Redwall Song
Post by: DanielofRedwall on June 21, 2011, 11:22:35 AM
What is your favourite song from the Redwall series? This includes ones that aren't on the Redwall song cd. My favourite is the one Rose sings to calm the bees down in Martin the Warrior. I also like the one Salixa sings in Eulalia! when they all sit around the campfire. What's yours?

It's been a while since I've read my Redwall books, and sadly my least favourites had to be relegated to a box under my bed to make room in my non-existent bookshelves, but my absolute favourite song is the one Craklyn and Piknim sing in "The Pearls of Lutra", which is incidentally one of my favourite books in the series. I don't know if it was ever given music, since I live in Australia and didn't know until recently that music had been put with them. I made up my own tune for it after I read the book for the first time. I think I was about nine, and I still remember it now at twenty-two!

Weeeeell speaking of the Pearls of Lutra, I'll nominate Clecky's hare song for my favorite of the moment. The one where he goes on about how hares are the noblest, something something, with ears that aren't stumpy like a bunny, something something... that one.  :D

There are so many good ones to choose from! I'll have to give this some consideration.

...

(15 minutes later)

I guess I'd have to say that song Doogy Plumm sings about going home after a long war campaign/mission is my favorite.

But I also have to give props to Boorab singing "The Battle of the Boiling Water." Makes me cry every time I read it.

My favorite song is the one Basil teaches to Rollo. I made my own tune to it.

"I wrestle a mole and fight a sparrow,
I'd shot a rat with a big ol' arrow!
I'd kill a spider for good old cider!
Gooooood ooolll' ciderrr!"

Oh Rollo's mom was so mad.

I have only heard a few of the songs from the CD around the internet, but I don't actually own it. However, I love Rose's version of the Noonvale song in the TV version of Martin the Warrior:

QuoteYou will find me at Noonvale
on the side of a hill
when the summer is peaceful and high
where streamlets meander the valley is still
'neath the blue of a calm cloudless sky.

Look for me at dawn
when the earth is asleep
'till each dewdrop is kissed by the day.
'Neath the rowan and alder
a vigil I'll keep
every moment that you are away.

The earth gently turns as the seasons change slowly
all the flowers and leaves born to wane,
Hear my song o'er the lea like the wind soft and lowly
and come back to Noonvale again.

Yes I just typed that all from memory... :D

It was a very little song by a mole in one of the books:
"H'o a bumbly bee be a wunnerful burd,
He'm sing a song that you'm never hurd,
H'o a fuzz buzz fuzz buzz fuzz buzz buzz,
That's all he'm ever does does does!"

I also like the songs in the beginning of each of the 3 books in Rakkety Tam
"Rakkety rakkety rakkety tam,
The drums are beatin brae.
Rackety rakkity rakkity tam,
Are ye marchin off tae war?

A warrior from the borders he came,
A buckler o'er his shoulder,
A claymore swingin' at his side,
There's no' a beast who's bolder!

O Rakkety Tam has sold his sword,
Ah scarce believe he's done it.
He swore an oath untae a fool,
Who took his pledge upon it!"

I think of all of them as chants or poems, even though I know they're mostly songs. I've never been any good at making up tunes! I agree with you though, this one in particular goes best as a poem.

Speaking of poems, my favourite is that one about Mariel. I learnt it by heart when I was in fourth grade because I really liked it. Let's see if I can remember it...

Quote from: Mariel of RedwallThe Wind's icy breath o'er the land of death
Tells a tale of yet to come.
'Cross heaving waves which mark ships' graves
Lies an island known to some.
Where seas pound loud and rocks stand proud
And blood flows free as water.
To the far northwest which knows no rest
Came a father and his daughter.
The mind was numb, and the heart struck dumb
When the night seas took the child.
Hurled to her fate by a son of hellgate,
The dark one called The Wild.
You who they seek though you do not speak
The legend is yet to be born.
One day you will sing over stones that are red
In the misty summer dawn.

Who says that I am dead.
Knows not at all.
I-a that is
Two mice within Redwall.
The warrior sleeps
Twixt hall and Cavern Hole.
I-am that is
Take on my mighty role.
Look for the sword in
Moonlight streaming forth
At night when days first hour,
Reflects the north.
Look over the threshold
Seek what thou shall see.
I-am that is
My sword shall wield for me.

Did that just now by memory, so I probably got it wrong. But we all know that one don't we?

Here's another one for the Rakkety Tam chapterthing songs - love those to death!

Another of my very favorites is from Taggerung, when Boorab has the dibbun choir singing a feast song, one of the little hogs sings something entirely different.

QuoteHo welcome to the feast, you beast,
I hopes you trip and fall.
I've got a fat grandpa, ha ha ha,
Who'll prob'ly eat it all.
The lark defends his feathery chest,
The sun has sunk into his vest,
If he don't bathe before too long,
There'll be an awful pong...

Hahahahaha!

Well, for one:

Romsca's challenge in Pearls of Lutra:

Quote from: Romsca, Pearls of LutraI'm the babe of a bloodripper,
Born in the teeth of a gale,
I'm the one who wields the sword,
An' makes the foebeast wail.
I'm as sharp as the reef rock,
I carry death in me paw,
Go where I like, slay who I will,
That's the corsairs' law!
Blood's me favourite colour,
Swifter'n lightnin' aye,
Stand out me way, stand out I say,
Step aside now, or die!
'Cos I'm the spawn o' nightstorm,
An' death sails in me wake,
I sheath me blade in innards,
An' what I want, I take!
Come one, come all, I'm waitin',
I'll flay yer carcass bare,
So everyplace I go they'll say,
" 'Ahoy, you bold corsair!"

Also Guja's song:

Quote from: Guja, Pearls of LutraIf there's plunder in the offin'
That's fer me, that's fer me,
An' I never charge, I'll kill you all for free,
Give me lots o' lovely loot,
An' a cask o' grog ter boot,
Up the anchor, loose the sails an' let me go!

Another great one from the king of composers, Gonff:
"Sala-manda-stron, look out here we come,
A thief, a warrior and a mole.
Though the quest may take it's toil,
We'll march until we reach our goal,
Sala-manda-stron."

That wasn't from memory, I read it out of my Mossflower book (which has certainly seen better days!). I also love it when Dinny starts singing:
"Salad-anna-sconn, lookit yurr 'ee come."

If we're talking about the audiobooks, here's the songs I love best:

Outcast of Redwall - Bryony's seasons song and "Home Returning"
Loamhedge - "Dawn"
High Rhulain - the one about the bees, and the otterclans' war song

But my all-time favorite is "Kroova's Song" from Triss.

Were days that long, was grass so green,
in seasons of youthful desire?
Roaming o'er seas of aquamarine,
where western suns drowned in fire.

Across mountains, forest, and river,
I'd wander carefree and bold,
Never heeding the days to come
When I'd wake up slow and old.

Oh how the silent summer noon
warms dusty memories,
In an orchard amidst my dreams,
'neath verdant, shadeful trees.

Come visit me, you little ones,
hear stories, songs, and rhymes,
A roving warrior's saga
of far-gone, golden times.

I made up my own tune to that one. I also did that for the searat's ballad in the beginning of Pearls of Lutra, and a couple in Marlfox. It's fun, but I found myself sort of making it like the theme tune in the video, and I don't want that.

The Corsairs ballad from Pearls of Lutra and the song from the Abbot's dream
High or the hills, far or the seas,
Fly with the small birds and follow the breeze,
Go with your heart, where would you roam?
Back to the rose colored stones you call home.
Where faded summers will echo again,
Brown autumn trees, or the springs gently rain.
Shadows are falling cross woodlands you know,
Rest weary one in the warm firelight's glow.

And the song about summer that Mariel sings in Mariel of Redwall. A couple more come to mind too. Like the one in Rakkety Tam.

"Rakkety rakkety rakkety tam,
The drums are beatin brae.
Rackety rakkity rakkity tam,
Are ye marchin off tae war?

A warrior from the borders he came,
A buckler o'er his shoulder,
A claymore swingin' at his side,
There's no' a beast who's bolder!

O Rakkety Tam has sold his sword,
Ah scarce believe he's done it.
He swore an oath untae a fool,
Who took his pledge upon it!"

And too many other to mention. I have quite a few memorized and tend to sing them often. They're the type of songs that tend to come to mind when they suit the moment :D

More of like a poem....
To where they will go,
This is a secret nobeast may know
                                                       Marlfox!
Plundering murdering vulpine thieves,
Who blend with stone or meld with leaves,
                                                                    Marlfox!
See the pale eyes and swirling cloak,
appear like nightmare,
Vanish like smoke.
                                                                                 Marlfox!
What steals upon the silent air,
Gleaming fangs, Mottled fur,
A deadly axblade lying there                                                    Marlfox!

Nobeast living can hide from thee,
O thou who treads invisibly,
Cross hill and vale through woods and rocks.
                                                                                                               Marlfox!
                                                                                                                      Marlfox!

Me, I'd say the song 'Winter O',  by Mariel.

"The Winter O, the Winter O,
With cold, and dark, and driving snow,
O not for me the Winter O,
Me friend I tell you so.
In Spring the winds do sport and play,
And rain can teem down anyday,
While Autumn oft is misty grey,
My friend hear what I say.
When Summer sunlight comes each morn,
The birds sing sweet each golden dawn,
And flowers get kissed by every bee,
While shady stands the tree.
The Summer O, the Summer O,
Amid it's golden peace I go,
From noon to lazy evening glow,
My friend I told you so!"

Alas! Maybe I can get somebody on youtube to do it... Hmm. XD But, er, back to the topic, of course.  ;) How about that heave-ho song in Legend of Luke? The one Trimp sings while the abbey beasts are hoisting up a beam of some sort to build the dormitories. I always imagined it to have a catchy marching tune. Will quote it once I've got the book in front of me, here...

"There's many a patch that I ain't trod,
Nor ever been before there.
An' yet it seems as close to me,
As some ole coat I've worn, sir.
Some streams an' rivers, rocks an' fields,
That I have come upon, sir.
I'm seein' them for my first time,
Yet I know every one there.
Now was I here ten seasons back,
Did I sit 'neath that tree there?
An' if I pass this way agin,
Then will I meet myself, sir?"

That's the song that Nimbalo sings to Deyna in The Taggurung. I always loved it. I get that feeling of Deja vu all the time. :)

Everyone should check out nijibug's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFLY084xxB8&feature=related) YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB21sGAIn5c&feature=related). She's recorded 13 minutes of Redwall songs in a very fine voice.

Though I'm not much of a singer, I recorded my own rendition of The Battle of Boiling Water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEM9Y7z1psM) sometime last month. (Most of my videos are obscure traditional songs, some of which are quite obscene, so I caution anyone who goes poking around my channel.)

Me, I'd say the song 'Winter O',  by Mariel.
I absolutely LOVE this one. Completely and utterly. I want to hear it sung in every possible tune by every single voice in the world. Love it.
I looked up this song after hearing you gush about it, and I wasn't disappointed! Now I love it too. I sang it for you, but I guess you didn't hear me on account of us being on opposite sides of the world. Oh well!

That's okay. I sung it for you too. I guess we were of a like mind. :) I love the tune.

My personal favorite is one from Outcast of Redwall where it's talking about how Sunflash's fame spread throughout all the land.  I also like the one from the Bellmaker where Finbarr sings about the lobster that married a cod.  Glad I'm not the only one that makes up tunes to Redwall songs.  :P
Her's the one from Outcast:
I met with three weasels one warm summer night
And I feared for my life I'd be beaten and slain
But their faces were fearful all ashen with fright
And they jibbered and whimpered like they were insane
"Oh save us preserve us, oh hide us from him,
the one with the mark of the sun on his face!
In one paw he carries a great hornbeam limb!
He's the warrior lord they call Sunflash the Mace!"
Of a sudden the earth seemed to tremble and shake,
and the verminous weasels passed out in a swoon
As he came like the wind with a hawk in his wake
There he stood strong and tall 'neath the moon
I'll never forget what he told me that night as he looked at the weasels stretched out where they fell
"You're a very brave beast to down six in one fight.
For a small baby doormouse, you've done very well!"

Old places I travelled long seasons ago
Kind faces of friends I have seen
What's round the river bend, dear, I don't know
Tis a land where my heart's never been.
Will I sit in the shade of.....( something, something...typing this from the audiobook and can't quite hear. XD)
If I gaze in the stream may I see
there standing beside me the one that I love
or sad and alone must I be
The tears I have shed here are mingled and gone
through waters which flow without end
And I must drift ever seeking that one
Waiting there on some far river bend

From Taggerung. Loooooove this song to itty bitty pieces.

Just found this song as I was flicking through my Redwall books, which I often do. It's from my favourite book, Outcast of Redwall.

"I once 'ad a cattypillar come t'live with me,
We was both best of friends as ever there c'd be,
He'd wiggle round upon the ground, he'd smile an' shake me paw,
An' every time I went out, stop in an' guard my door.
But then one time when I returned I cried out "Lack a day!"
My little cattypillar he had left an' gone away,
An' there upon my mantlepiece, a butterfly I saw,
Far too proud to speak to me, he flew right out the door.
Coloured bright in warm sunlight, that creature winged away,
I've never found my cattypillar to this very day,
Which makes me say unto myself, now I am old and wise,
I do like cattypillars, but I can't stand butterflies!"

Good day sir bee, I'm Gonff your cuzzin'. "

It's a classic! :D

I must say I'm rather fond of this one from The Rogue Crew:

"O there's blood on the axe,
an' there's blood on the shield,
an' blood on te swordblade, too.
An' if yore a foe of our Rogue Crew,
there'll be blood all over you!
Blood blood! Blood blood-"

I think it's quite a nice little ditty, pity the Long Patrol interrupted it.  ;)

Aha! That's what it was. Thanks!

I'll have to find a way to put this song on youtube or something, it has a beautiful melody... kind of what you'd expect an old celt song to sound like. :)

I love the one from TLoL:

Ho wot d'you give to a saucy crew,
Stew! Stew! Stew!
Wot's better than a bowl o' stew?
Why a bowl o' stew or two!
We fries the varnish off the mast,
Then adds some ole rope ends,
An' the cap'n's boots all boiled up slow,
Good flavour to it lends.
So scoff it up 'tis good for you,
Stew! Stew! Stew!
Made with a drop of lantern oil,
An' a barnacle or two,
Some fine sail threads an' fishes' heads,
Then roast the cook's ole socks,
An' add to that some o' the fat,
They use to grease the locks!
Ho stew, stew, luvverly stew,
No skilly 'n' duff or brown burrgoo,
Just swallow the bits that you can't chew,
An' fill a plate for yore worst mate,
Then sit an' watch him tempting fate,
With face so green and nose so blue,
Stew! Stew! Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwww!
;D

I love 'home returning' and the one at the start of Lord Brocktree 'the teller of tales.'
I Also really love the shrew song in the 'Pearls of Lutra' the one thy sing to the dibbuns at the beach.... shrum shrum i think it's called

Hidden Text
"Shrum, shrum, double die dum,
Rivers may flow but the streams they do run,
Kissing the willows that droop sad and low,
Through sunlight and shadow as onward they go.
Shrum, shrum, fie upon thee,
Ye rivers an' streams that flow down to the sea,
I sit by your banks through the long weary day,
To mourn for my true love who you bore away.
Shrum, shrum, cruel is fate,
How long must I linger by water and wait,
You babble round rock and you swirl around stone,
And share your dark secrest with none but your own.
Shrum, shrum, tears may fall,
I'm bound for the place where the lone seabirds call,
I'll build me a boat and sail down to the sea,
There I'll search for the heart that is dearest to me.
Shrum, shrum, shrummmmmmmmm!"

I was so thrilled when I noticed that person had uploaded those!  I now own the majority of the library's old Redwall audiobook collection  (there's still High Rhulain and Rakkety Tam in circulation), but of course I'd have to find the song I'm looking for somewhere in 8 tapes' worth (per book), and besides, some of the oldest tapes sound rather fuzzy (Salamandastron especially).   But now with the songs online, I can listen to them crystal clear and whichever I want whenever I want.   ;D

Sand not as alarm, lone seabird do wing,

Sand not as alarm, lone seabird do wing,
and alas most ran, list to me whilst I sing.

I love that song! I memorized it!!!

Egburt's version of Boorab's feast song in The Taggerung:

Ho welcome to the feast, you beast,
I hopes you tip an' fall,
I've got a fat grandpa, ha ha ha,
Who'll prob'ly eat it all.
The lark defends his feathery chest,
The sun has sank into his vest,
If he don't bathe before too long,
There'll be an awful pong...

Well, for one:
Spoiler
Romsca's challenge in Pearls of Lutra:
Quote from: Romsca, Pearls of LutraI'm the babe of a bloodripper,
Born in the teeth of a gale,
I'm the one who wields the sword,
An' makes the foebeast wail.
I'm as sharp as the reef rock,
I carry death in me paw,
Go where I like, slay who I will,
That's the corsairs' law!
Blood's me favourite colour,
Swifter'n lightnin' aye,
Stand out me way, stand out I say,
Step aside now, or die!
'Cos I'm the spawn o' nightstorm,
An' death sails in me wake,
I sheath me blade in innards,
An' what I want, I take!
Come one, come all, I'm waitin',
I'll flay yer carcass bare,
So everyplace I go they'll say,
" 'Ahoy, you bold corsair!"

Also Guja's song:

Quote from: Guja, Pearls of LutraIf there's plunder in the offin'
That's fer me, that's fer me,
An' I never charge, I'll kill you all for free,
Give me lots o' lovely loot,
An' a cask o' grog ter boot,
Up the anchor, loose the sails an' let me go!

For some reason, I couldn't stop laughing when I read that part of the book. Definitely my favorite.

You mean this one?
Spoiler
Twixt earth and sky where birds can fly,
I look below to see
A place of wood with plumage green
That breezes move like sea
Behind me as the dawn breaks clear,
Woodpigeons come awake.
See brown dust roll, twixt green and gold,
Unwinding like a snake.
So fly and sing, the wildgoose is King.
Over golden acres far below,
Our wings beat strong and true,
Where deep and wet, see flowing yet,
Another snake of blue.
Across the earth is changing shape
With form and color deep,
Afar the teeth of land rise up,
To bite the wool of sheep.
So fly and sing, the wildgoose is King.
Beyond this, much is lost in mist,
But here and there I see
The treachery of muddy gray,
Tis no place for the free.
Oh feathered brethren of the air,
Fly straight and do not fall,
Onward cross the wet gold flat,
Where seabirds wheel and call.
So fly and sing, the wildgoose is King.
The skies are growing darker, see
Our beacon shining bright.
Go high across the single fang
That burns into the night.
We leave you now as we wing on,
Our journey then must be
Where sky and water meet in line,
And suns drown in the sea.
So fly and sing, the wildgoose is King.

I think I like most of Gonff's stuff the most. They are fun and have good lyrics. I do also like the poem/song in Rakkety Tam for each different chapter/act/section/whatevertheyarecalled
