My fiancee didn't see Princess Bride until a year and a half ago... She liked it but she wasn't obsessed like so many are.
It makes me wonder if it has no more merit than having a very dedicated fanbase.

Nope. I was about 16 when I first watched it and it was delightful. I do think it requires an appreciation for certain types of humor, but it's definitely a masterpiece in its own right. Having a dedicated fanbase helps, but that's not all that's going for it.
