I googled Taniwha, and it seems to be a water monster of Maori legend. So, given Nidhwal are called 'cousins of the dragons' then other water reptile monster things could also be.

The word 'taniwha' just means monster. While it is true that the legends are of water monsters, it is not necessarily a given fact. I am not a taniwha moana. As mentioned in several other places, I breath fire and fly.
