Hello and welcome to Jet critiques Homestuck track art. In which a teenager with literally no qualifications or experience with art says what he thinks about art.

Part 1: Homestuck Vol. 1-4

Showtime (Piano Refrain)

The first few albums are rather interesting in that they take screenshots directly from the comic. In this screenshot, it shows John playing the piano. There is nothing thematically wrong with this, it illustrates precisely what the track is about, it's just rather boring. It's also rather a downgrade from what I've grown used to from the later albums. One of my highest hopes is that the earlier albums get their track covers replaced with newer images made specifically for that purpose. As it is, the image is rather cluttered and has little focus.

On the other hand, this image works very well with the track, illustrating perfectly what kind of music you should expect.

Showtime (Original Mix)

Now this one is a little more difficult to critique. The Showtime (Original Mix) track does play during the first Strife with Dad in comic. However, this is John's battle theme and you would expect the track art to be more focused on him, you know, battling.

Aggrieve (Violin Refrain)

Now this is more what you want from a character theme. Rose takes centre-stage playing her violin. The rest of the room is greyed out, placing more focus on her. A+ character theme image.

Sburban Countdown

Now that's what I call appropriate! The perspective of the meteor bearing down on the peaceful neighbourhood gives a good feeling of dread and anticipation.

Aggrieve

This one could go either way for me. For Rose's battle theme, you'd probably more want an image of Rose being awesome, rather than something ridiculous like this. On the other hand, this does illustrate quite well just how ridiculous this fight was in retrospect.

Showtime (Imp Strife Mix)

I don't really have a particular problem with this one, it illustrates the concept well, it's just sort of boring. Perhaps if it had John and the imp fighting it would work better, since, again, this is John's battle theme.

Nannaquin

I really think this image works well. It shows that it's Nanna's theme, but it also adds an air of stupidity to the whole thing.

Skies of Skaia

Now this one's interesting. Thematically, it's perfect. It just shows Skaia; this is Skaia's theme. However, I think it would work better zoomed out quite a bit more.

Harlequin (Rock Version)

I can't exactly fault this picture. It's chaotic, and, more importantly, that is where the song is used in-comic. However, Harlequin (Rock Version) is such a great song, I think it deserves a better cover. Maybe John or some imps shredding it on electric guitars.

John Sleeps / Skaian Magicant

I guess it fits? It certainly puts focus on the mysterious fourth kid, but it's just not very interesting. I think it would be better if it showed us the clouds of Skaia, or perhaps the image of the First Gate reflected in John's glasses as his eyes close, like in the flash.

Upward Movement (Dave Owns)

Now this one I like. It showcases Dave front and centre, raising his eyes to the sky with determined expression on his face. It just works so well for Dave's theme. His life is a struggle, and he has to keep moving upward and fight to escape it.

Vagabounce

Ah the Wayward Vagabond. Cutest character in anything ever. I like that it shows him having fun, but I really don't think the chess game is the way to go about it, considering how significant chess is to him specifically. I think him standing over Can Town laughing would be a better fit.

Explore

Ah (S) WV: Ascend, the first prominent indication that this comic was going to be something special. The image just really fits with the idea that something bigger than anything previously imagined is going on. The image of the capsule rising out of the sands of the vast desert just works perfectly.

And here we have Jade's theme. Again, much like with John, the image is far too cluttered. There's too much going on in the background and it takes the focus off Jade.

These are all terrible and boring and I really don't think I need to explain why.

I guess it works well? I find it a little boring, personally.

Now this one I really don't like. Sure it focuses on John and that thing with the green background does happen in the flash, but I really think showing the introduction image of the Crude Ogres would work a lot better and be more thematically appropriate.

Beatdown Round 2

I really love this one. It shows the conflict between Dave and Bro, but I think the decapitated puppet shows that Dave isn't taking it as seriously as he should be.

I know Jade is meant to break established patterns, but her sleeping really doesn't work well for a battle theme. I think the image of her holding her gun with the fire blazing in front of her would work a lot better.

It works pretty well, but I think the image of Jaspers lying on the floor in Mom Lalonde's room after being transportalised would work better. But showing his funeral is very appropriate for the song.

I think this image does an excellent job of highlighting how ridiculous this song is.

It illustrates what it's about pretty well and it also manages to be pretty cool so I'd say that this one was a success.

Sburban Jungle

I think this is a perfect picture for this song. It's dramatic and striking and it also manages to capture the essence of the flash it was used in.

Three in the Morning (RJ's I Can Barely Sleep In This Casino Remix)

What is there to say about this one? It's simple and striking and relevant to the song.

I guess it works well. It's got a sort of desolate and lonely feel to it, much like the song. I just think it's a bit boring really.

It's a very cool image. Very simple too. I think it illustrates the idea of LoLaR pretty well.

Same with this. The gears in the fiery red background don't detract anything from the image of Dave and they help to illustrate the idea of LoHaC.

I think this is the perfect image for Black. Jack standing above the BQ's ashes, sliding on the ring as her blood marks his head with a spade shape. It's a great "you should be scared" image.

All the clues pointed to Tarlok. The sanctions guaranteed to rile up the non-benders, the attitude. Heck, even the way he stood was like Amon. But apparently not.
