Yup, Earthquake kills eggs more frequently than hatches them, so I pretty much never use it.

Why can't I have over 6 dragons

When you first join, you can have up to 4 eggs at a time; you'll be able to grab more once they hatch.  Once you get 50 adult or frozen hatchling dragons, you'll get a bronze trophy on the top of your page and be able to have up to 5 eggs at a time.  The number increases twice more after that - silver trophy at 200 and gold trophy at 500.

I would understand that better if I knew just how rare that metallic egg is.

They're brand-new and there's only 20 of those new silver prize ones on the entire site.  Compare that there's several hundred Holly dragons and they're the next-rarest breed and still hard to get.  And that there's over 55,000 users on the site - so there are probably over 500,000 dragons of the common breeds such as Mint dragons.  That person will be able to get any trade they ever want - people will trade them neglecteds and golds and silvers and stuff, several at a time. In the beginning like this it will be because almost nobody has that breed, and later on, their particular dragon's eggs will still be heavily desirable because theirs is "caveborn" and people will be able to start fancy lineages with that dragon's eggs.  

(The person who abandoned it probably did it on accident, meaning to do abandon a different egg.  Or maybe they had their limit and it was automatically sent to the Abandoned Page when the prize was awarded.  I'm certain they wouldn't have done it on purpose.)

It will probably be several months, if not over a year, before any of us get one of the new prize dragons.  When the tinsels were released, I joined a group where people said, "if I get one, I'll give away the first two eggs I breed".  And then each of the people who got those eggs gave away their first two eggs as well, and so on.  So the population was increasing by double each time around, but still it took months.

Guardian of Nature.  Once you get a Magma, Ice, and Thunder dragon, they'll get the action Summon, which you can use only once every half month or so.  Summon has a very small chance (between 0.5% and 11% chance) of summoning a Guardian of Nature dragon.  You can only have two of these on your account, just like most Holiday dragons (but unlike Holiday dragons, if one dies, you can't get another one).
