"We pursue the Ottomans into the depths of the Sinai Desert, a place so vast that I feel insignificant– so timeless that I think of those who have come before us. This will truly be a battle from Roman times. Like them, our objectives are cities with mythical names: Jerusalem, Nazareth, Damascus. If the ruins around me could speak, they would warn us– warn us of ourselves."

-British officer

"From a window in the chateau we can see their tanks gathering, lumbering forward in the half-light of dawn, their huge fascines on top making them appear even more like monstrous prehistoric animals, animals ready to consume men and material alike. What has become of mankind when he creates only to destroy. It will all be over soon, they say. Yes, in a bloodbath of flesh and steel.

-German soldier
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

"The Emperor must remember his own words. We are Lords of the Crystal, yes? Even if Rian talk, none will believe.

They will shun him. Cast him out. How can they not? To believe him is not to believe themselves.

Skeksis reign a thousand trine and will reign a thousand thousand more, until last star in sky goes dark.

Gelfling will submit, head bowed, back bent as have always done. Gelfling want to be ruled. Gelfling need to be ruled. Because Gelfling are weak! Gelfling are small. And Skeksis are forever!

We took the Crystal. Thra belongs to us now. And is nothing...nothing Gelfling can do!"

"‎Halt looked up at the trees above him.
"Why does this boy ask so many questions?" he asked the trees.
Naturally, they didn't answer."

"Woe to the warm-bloods who would despoil our realm, for their craving for trinkets and baubles drives them deeper into lands forbidden to them. Cast them out, show them no pity, feed their carcasses to the beasts of the jungle and leave their bones to bleach upon the golden shores of our land. Let them see that it is folly to intrude upon the domains of the Lizardmen."

– Lord Mazdamundi

McLean: I stayed home knitting mufflers for our boys in Vietnam, Colonel. It was the least I could do.
Bear: You son of a Bolshevik. McLean, I bet you were plotting the overthrow of this country, the assassination of all the members of the Senate and the House, and the imprisonment of all military officers.
McLean: You're absolutely right, Colonel. I was lying. I spent a jolly summer in the Kremlin studying germ warfare with Dr. Zhivago. But one thing you got wrong. I would have nothing to do with the imprisonment of all military officers. I voted to line them all up against the wall and let them have it with Yugoslav-made flamethrowers.

The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy

"What will become of us? Where will we go, we who wander this vast wasteland in search of our better selves?"

"Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos."

"But now, for the first time, I see you are a man like me. I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony--Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?"

-Paul, All Quiet on the Western Front

"Everyone, they concerned for Queek's sanity. Perhaps you worry less for what is in Queek's head, and more on keeping what is in yours."

"Let others write of battles fought,
In bloody, ghastly fields,
Where honor greets the man who wins
And death, the man who yields.

But I will write of him who fights
And vanquishes his sins.
Who struggles on through weary years,
Against himself, and wins."

True Heroism--Author unknown (at least, to me)
I've been looking back over these past few months, and I've felt off. Felt different. At the time, I wanted nothing more than to go back to the good old days.
But now? Could I just ignore all the ways I've suffered and grown? Caught hold and let go? Could I return from life, having now lived?

Thanquol

"Even if you leave this room, you can never leave this room."

-The Room

I suppose I could finish the poem here.

True Heroism
He is a hero stanch and brave who fights an unseen foe ,
And put at last beneath his feet
His passions base and low;
Who stands erect in manhood's might,
Undaunted, undismayed, --
The bravest man who drew a sword
In foray or in raid.

It calls for something more than brawn
Or muscle to overcome
An enemy who marcheth not
With banner, plume, or drum, --
A foe forever lurking nigh
With silent, stealthy tread,
Forever near your board by day,
At night, beside your bed.

All honor then, to that brave heart,
Though poor or rich he be,
Who struggles with his baser part,
Who conquers, and is free!
He may not wear a hero's crown,
Or fill a hero's grave,
But Truth will place his name among
The bravest of the brave
