Heeey! Recorders rock! They can be so much cooler than what most people think. I play five different kinds of recorder at an intermediate-advanced level:

Sopranino recorder
Soprano recorder (the kind you get in fourth grade, but they sound awesome if you actually know what you're doing)
Alto recorder
Tenor recorder
Bass recorder

I've played recorders multiple times for church and was in an early music ensemble in college that consisted mostly of recorders, lute, krummhorn, sackbutt (a predecessor to the trombone, yeah, you're allowed to giggle at the name), harp and voice. So yes, recorders can be pretty rockin' instruments if you know what you're doing on them.

I also play trumpet and euphonium (my main instrument), am middling at the piano, and will hopefully be picking up the tuba as soon as I can get my hands on one.

I'm most competent at guitar, both acoustic and electric. That would be my main instrument.

I'm a pretty reasonable singer too.

Other instruments I can play to some degree as well are bass guitar, drums, piano/synths, harmonica and various percussion instruments (including the drums).

I've played piano for 10 or 11 years now. This is my 8th year on clarinet. I played alto sax through Junior High, but got to busy to keep up with it. :'(
I also used to play recorder.....
I find it really funny that people give that instrument to small children. That's one of the most painful instrument when played incorrectly and I have yet to hear a child play it in a none painful way. I have a friend who plays the recorder in an amazingly beautiful way, though, so I'm not completely against the instrument!

I love playing the piano. I have played for almost 3 three years, I started late and I always wish I started when I was young. I truly have a passion for practicing and I don't mind, if I have the time, to sit for hours and learn. I even have a youtube channel where I am starting to post video's of what I play.

I also play in my church's band, but mainly I use a synthesizer on the keyboard for that.

*deep breath*

I play bass, guitar, trumpet, cornet, tenor horn, (descant) recorder, bamboo flute, harmonica, pan pipes, cello, a little piano, xylophone/glockenspiel... and I think I missed one there. I always manage to miss one. I sing too. Maybe that was it. In any case I'm mainly focusing on voice, bass and guitar at the moment. I seem to play a lot of what Daniel plays. :D

Title: Re: Musical Instruments
Post by: Ottakar on November 29, 2011, 04:27:50 AM
A glockenspiel and a xylophone are pretty much the same thing. Except a glockenspiel is metal, and a xylophone is wooden.
Title: Re: Musical Instruments
Post by: DanielofRedwall on November 29, 2011, 07:31:14 AM
Also, the glockenspiel has those notes in between the others (I don't know what they're called), like the black notes on a piano or keyboard.

I can play piano. I'm a little out of practice since I stopped lessons.
I also taught myself harmonica.
And I taught myself that baby xylophones can be musical instruments.
I can sing. I don't sound awful but I don't sound amazing. But that doesn't stop me and I sing all the time.

I play piano at a beginner's level--I've been learning it in college, and while I can figure out essentially whatever repertoire is assigned to me, I'm terrible at sight reading.

I played flute at the advanced side of a beginner's level after using it in band from 6th-12th grade, but aside from a 4-week revisit in a woodwind class, I haven't used it since.

One thing that I would love to learn how to play is the erhu... I'm finding it difficult to locate teachers here in Michigan, though.

And... does recorder count? I was playing around with it a while back and it finally hit me that the recorder was the instrument the Redwall series uses during its episode titles. And I find it fun to imitate the tin whistle solo in the Return of the King soundtrack for when Sam is just about to carry Frodo up the mountain.

I would definitely be a beginner at recorder, too. But it's fun every once and a while.

I'm pretty useless musically. :D I did have a few piano lessons when I was younger but it wasn't for me at the time. I'd like to get better at an instrument sometime - keeps being put off, though! We have a piano, keyboards and guitars in the house, so won't have to spend money to start learning something. :)

Umm...  Well, I started playing piano maybe... five years ago?  'Bout the same with clarinet, too, and I started bass almost three years ago (well, this is my third year playing it, I mean.).  But it really just depends on the teacher.  I've had some pretty darn good teachers (three different piano teachers, all of them great, and one band teacher who's a clarinetist.).

Oh! I love playing music!
I played the recorder for a year in 4th grade, because it was a requirement.
Then I played the viola for about 3 years, starting from 6th grade. But my viola was borrowed from the college my dad works at, so when they took the viola back, I couldn't play anymore. :(
Then just this year, I played piano for a few months, but the teacher went on a trip and never contacted us to begin lessons again, so that quit.
Now I'm starting the violin and I'm really excited for it! :D I'm also saving my money up to buy my own viola so I can do that again as well.

my saxophone is a conn 6m "naked lady" made in 1941. it was called the naked lady because it has an engraving of a naked lady on the bell. i've been meaning to take a picture of it and share it with the world. unfortunately the best thing i can share is a picture of me playing a gig earlier this summer;

I play piano, flute, piccolo, and recorder (and not just fourth-grade stuff - I mean I was in a recorder ensemble in high school).  I don't own my own piccolo, so the only times I've played that after graduating high school have been for the town's labor day parade, when I play with students and alumni of the high school and borrow the school one.  I play flute sometimes at church (for example, Ash Wednesday and Christmas), and piano I just do at home for fun.  I'm currently half re-learning a song I'd known years ago and haven't played in a while:  "100 Years" by Five for Fighting.

I play clarinet in my Advanced Band, as well as electric bass guitar in Intermediate Band (I know, the music program I'm in has such original names.  :P) and somewhere from intermediate to advanced with the piano.  Oh, and I'm a second soprano in my choir.

I was gonna suggest Rocksmith. It's helping me quite a lot with learning bass techniques. I'm learning double stops at the moment.

Aha!  I knew it!  (As soon as I saw the 'flöte' part of the word, I went, "Hmm, that looks kinda like flute...  But why wouldn't he just call it flute?"  And from there on I tried to figure out what it was.  I kinda came to the conclusion that it was probably some kind of whistle or recorder, and apparently I was correct!  ;D)

Okay, so this DOES have something to do with music, as it happened in band class yesterday, so I have a fun story:

Advanced Band is the second to last band of the day at my music program, and I sat down with my clarinet in the front row, as usual, waiting for my teacher to come in.  When she did, she noted how there were very few band members that day.  I hadn't noticed that until she pointed it out, but after a quick headcount, there was just over half of the band there.  The rest were gone.

My teacher pulled out a "new" piece (one that we played last year and are getting this year so we can have the less experienced bands listen to us in awe at mass band), called Fiera Winds, and we played through that (surprisingly, most of us remembered our parts, even though it's been a year.) twice.  After that, my teacher glanced through her scores and went, "Y'know, since every song we have is gonna sound really bad with half a band, why don't we play a game?"

So, yes, almost all of the Advanced Band time was spent playing The Name Game:  Empires.  (I was Carly Rae Jepsen, and my sister, who was Nicholas Cage, guessed me quickly.  Batman won.  :P)

Our conductor is awesome. She is an absolute ball of energy, and doesn't usually say "no".

She never gets mad at us, (Considering we don't do stupid things [ Yeah we do ]) and always makes us laugh whenever we get something wrong, even if you're the one getting it wrong.

A song we are working on, called "Perseus", we hit a wrong chord, and the entire orchestra took about 3 minutes to stop laughing.

Actually, playing piccolo is a pain. It is almost impossible to play in tune. I far prefer my flute, but when it comes to tuning, the violin is defenitely the best.

I play flute and piccolo, a bit of piano, violin, and... the fife! I was in a fife and drum corps...

I play flute and piccolo too; they're really cool instruments. I'm thankful I play 'em  :D

I like your name, by the way. And your siggy ;D
Piccolo is so cool!!! Flute is good too but I love the Piccolo!

Thanks Tam! :) I like them both. Piccolo is really fun because it can be heard over the band
It definitely can! A few months back my symphony played Scheherazade and they had an AWESOME Piccolo solo in it!

Cool :D Scheherazade sounds really pretty
Actually, playing piccolo is a pain. It is almost impossible to play in tune. I far prefer my flute, but when it comes to tuning, the violin is defenitely the best.

Lol, it is hard to tune but I think it's worth it :D
I can imagine it would be ::) ;D. A violin is pretty basic.

Well, y'all were talking about the cost of your instruments a little while back, and I thought I'd chime in on that.  My clarinet (a beginner's clarinet (ugh, I really wanna buy a new one, but they're so expensive!)) cost zero dollars to GET, but to fix it, it cost at least a hundred.  (My brother got it from a friend of his, and the instrument was completely broken.  Pads needed to be fixed, cord reapplied, keys fixed... a lot of work.)  But, hey, my brother did all the work (he was going through the phase of, "Hey, I wanna be an instrument repair man as my job!"), and he did a pretty good job for a beginner.  But, recently, things have been kinda dying, so I swapped out some of the parts of my brother's OTHER clarinet with mine, and now I call it a Frankenclarinet.  :P

I'm not sure buying a Double Bass right now is even physically possible for me. They're quite expensive.
Just fixing the Bow (The thingy that you rub on the string to make noise) would cost 50 to 100 dollars.

Oops, I replied to what I thought was a recent post. Sorry if I confused anyone for the brief time it was up. xP

I should probably start playing more piano.  I can't really play flute anymore for now because it's too loud for my apartment and I don't want to bother the neighbors.  I did, however, bring my keyboard with me, so I can still play piano.

I was last working on this before I moved out of my parents' house - I can get the hands individually, but together is hard.  I don't think I've really played it since, so I'm probably a bit rusty.

Do you guys play in an ensemble?

Right now, I'm in my school ensemble... the music program in my district is pretty small, so our band is actually combined with the junior high. Even though we play easy music, I enjoy playing with this group a lot! It is a small environment, but I'm glad we have something. My band director does very well with what she has, which honestly isn't as much as in other schools. Still, she does her best to give everyone the opportunities he or she deserves. I'm really glad we have her and this band :)

I'm competing too. It's this competition in which one prepares a solo for a judge. What's up with your musical lives? ;D

I would die inside if I couldn't play my flute in school.

Anyway, what's up, everyone? Not much for me...I need to practice more :P It's summer, so I don't have much except some music I'm learning for fun and a solo I won't be performing until May.
Well, I recently rejoined my band. The conductor was incredibly mean and picked on me constantly. :( Thankfully the old conductor's back and it should be fine now.

!!!  CLARINET!  How long have you been keeping this secret from me, fellow clarinetist?

I feel I've already said this on this thread, but it hasn't been for awhile, so I'll say it again:  I've played clarinet for about seven years, electric bass guitar for four years (although only three years in band; I dropped the bass (yes, I did just say that) because it was too stressful having to practice three instruments and my choir music every week), and piano for seven or eight years (can't remember when I started :P).  I've been singing in choir for about ten or eleven years, though.  (I can't remember exactly when kids are allowed to join the choir at my music program, but I wanna say it's either at five or six.)

I think the best part of playing a musical instrument is when you get to the stage you can hear a song and just figure out how to play it. Pianos can be very useful for this. (and they're generally fun to play with)

Violins SUCK and are USELESS, and let me tell you why:

1. They don't have a C STRING. This is a glaring flaw and automatically disqualifies the violin from being good, even without the following.
2. They are EASY. What's a good instrument if anyone can play it? Instrument like the viola, cello, and double bass are HARD, and thus anyone who plays them is BETTER (as is the instrument).
3. They can't go LOW. See point #1. Cellos and violas can go low. Basses, though they can go the lowest, also lack a C string, but their low pitch gets them into the "not bad" category (still, contrabass is on THIN ice).
4. EVERYONE plays them. No, seriously. Brett and Eddy, Paganini, Perlman, Bell, ad nauseam... it's just too mainstream of an instrument. Real musicians choose less played instruments, like the hurdy-gurdy.

I somewhat agree with points one and three. Low notes are better. (Though I don't see what's so great about the C string in particular)
However, points two and four I don't agree with.
Anyone can make a sound on a violin, same as with a cello, viola or bass. It takes skill to make music on a violin. (or any other instrument) Besides, simplicity is a good thing and, used right, beautiful.
As for point four, it's not a bad thing that violins are popular. That just proves their awesomeness.
Any instrument can be beautiful or horrible, depending on how it's played. Don't use the instrument as a judge of the musician. Both need to be considered but one doesn't necessarily match the quality of the other.

I guess I should add that that post was made as a joke. I myself am a violist and often find myself the butt of a great deal of jokes and jesting dislike, so I decided to offer my own in return. Violin is a beautiful instrument, just like many others, and some of the best compositions in the world are for it (and for good reason).

Well that's good, because I was 'boutta go off like nitroglycerin.  ;) Violins always seemed like the most emotional instrument to me, and are so smooth whilst doing so. There's not really a break between notes, something even the ever flexible guitar cannot claim as the strumming hand rises and falls. Difficulty is largely subjective in the music world too, even if there are things that are generally easier or harder to learn. That having been said, that which is often considered easy (such as the piano and guitar) have a completely different sound to them when handled by a master. It's honestly really cool how the simplest things can be the greatest display of skill (For reference, Twinkle Twinkle little star [variations] on the piano:

I don't see how having a C string makes a difference, or how the pitch does.
What makes a violin any easier than a viola? Apart from having a more well known clef, which therefore makes reading the music easier, I don't see any difference in how you actually play them. Plus, you wouldn't call violin easy if you had some really awkward 3rd position bits, with a difficult rhythm as well.
The fact that everybody plays them just shows that it's an awesome instrument. Besides, musicians (and bookworms) are dying out. At my school, which has over a thousand pupils, there are hardly any people who play instruments or take part in the music clubs. Which means that instruments that you learn at school and not as part of paid music lessons, such as piano/keyboard, are becoming a lot more popular, and there aren't as many people learning violin.

Drums, however, I really do not like. They are loud and annoying, and contribute nothing. Drums cannot play tunes, which makes them pretty useless.

That last bit is (partly) a joke, I know that drums aren't useless, as my friend who's a drummer tells me so a lot, but drummers are the enemies of violinists, and I like to annoy that friend by telling him how drums are useless and that violins are better.

Hickory mentioned that was a joke....
Since there are actual violists here they should probably answer, but I would suppose the C string allows it to play a greater range of music.
Violas' deeper pitch tends to confine them to fleshing out an orchestra, in between the cello and the violin.
(that's all I dare say.)

That's just how it is for groups of similar instruments with varying ranges.  It's similar for choirs as well; usually the sopranos have the melody, the bases form the root of chords, and tenors and altos add color.  Me being a tenor, though, I just pretend that I'm always singing the melody  ;D

Of course that can very greatly depending on the music, and the melody can be passed around between parts and certain moments can have different sections rise above others, even if only for a second.  The above is just a generalized statement.

At school, in the music room at lunch (anybody who does music clubs or takes music is allowed to go there at lunch, and there's choir on Tuesday and Friday lunch anyway), drums are banned. This is because last year, the year elevens found the friend I mentioned in my other post very annoying, and the music teacher also did. The three rules of the music room at lunch (and during handbells) are:

1. No drums.
2. No Fortnite dances.
3. No Eurovision.

Rules 2 and 3 don't really apply now, since the person they were intended to stop has left now, but they are still (unofficial) rules. Rule one is still official, though.
