Title: The video game topic
Post by: Matthias720 on June 15, 2011, 07:26:33 PM
Go on. You know you want to share your inner video game geekiness with everyone. ;D Whether you like console games or computer games, discuss your passion for the electronic arts. 8)

My personal favorites when it comes to computer games are Chex Quest, the Tradewinds series, the Aveyond series, Minecraft, and anything by Nifflas.

I only play one video game, an online computer game called "Poptropica".  It's a very creative virtual world where you create a character and go on adventures.  Poptropica is both appropriate and challenging for all ages.  I strongly recommend it to anyone with too much time on their hands...which is pretty much anyone who is reading this.  (Come on, let's face it, you're on a literary forum.)

Poptropica is a really popular site, so most likely everyone knows about it.  To be frank, I just wanted to post about it first.

My favorite computer games (computer=pretty much all I have myself):
Cyan Worlds's games in general, specifically Uru and the Myst Series.
Crysis (awesomest fts ever, Minecraft.
Was addicted to Runecraft for a couple months at one point, haven't played since.
Strategy games as well, including the awesomest of them all, Civilization III.

Nope I haven't finished it yet. I started but haven't had time to sit down and play through the rest.

**cracks knuckles**

Let's see... I'm a big fan of Sid Meier's Civilization series of games. I also play The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, SimCity 4, and... does RedwallMUCK count? I think it does. I mean, sure, it's not video per se, but if you think about it, all the text is just pictures (i.e. visual, ergo video) on a screen.

It's electronic, so it counts. :)

Actually I'm terrible at the game, I just stick around to admin the place and chat with people.

My favorite games are Final Fantasy 7, The Legend of Zelda; A link to the Past,  Star Fox SNES (or just about any rail shooter, for that matter)

Earlier today, I saw a video of a fan game of redwall which seemed like it would be interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgzsNUvHO5c

Lessee, I've played some of the Final Fantasy series and I recall being a diehard Kingdom Hearts fan back in high school. Mario Bros and Donkey Kong will always be the best, though! The original series, not that new 3D stuff they've been putting out for the wii and such.

Man, I'm old.

Plus there could also be an MMORPG/RTS based on the universe.
oooh that would be cool  :), a MMORPG/RTS game of redwall, you could have the Abby or Salamandastron as your base, you could choose your race and then do missions.

http://www.minecraft.net/ (http://www.minecraft.net/)
It's a game of adventure and exploration. You start on a deserted island with nothing, and by adding and removing blocks and building, you get to do more stuff with features in the game. You can build a fortress, cabin, computer, ranch, undergound dungeun, Multi-Tower Ultra-Porkchop Generator (bit different of a build here) or something else. Night time is where monsters in the form of mobs appear. It's a pretty popular and comprehensive game, really.

I would love a Redwall game. I thought about trying to make one "visual novel" style, but those are so boring that I kinda gave up on the thought. But a game would be so wonderfullll...!

I'm not a big video gamer, but I do have a few favourites. I mainly like sports games, like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010. I also quite like Jurrasic Park: Operation Genesis, despite it's glitches. Great game for its time, still play it for enjoyment and nostalgia. Heard of it? But my all time favourite game is... "Portal"! Haven't managed to get my hands on number 2 yet.

Minecraft is a sandbox game where you can pretty much do whatever you want. Do you like castles? You can build one. You like hunting? Go chase down some pigs or zombies. Exploring strike your fancy? Go ahead and wander hither and yon.

Of course, my telling you what you can do doesn't meany anything unless you read the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minecraft) and check out the official website (http://www.minecraft.net/). And if you decide that this is the kind of game you'd like to play, I wouldn't count on you being here as often as you are now. This game is ADDICTING.

...

Why are you still here? Go check it out.

I have to say Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite Video Game series. I do play WoW (World of Warcraft), I still play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my Nintendo 64(Yes, I still own one of those along with a Game Boy Color), I play Little Big Planet, and I play Final Fantasy on my PSP.

I'm trying to stop playing them, actually. I've already stopped playing the D.S, the Game Boy Color, and the Game Boy, but I still need to play two more games on the Advanced and then quit that as well.

I'm planning on stopping my playing on the Ps3 and Ps2, but I need to first get a new copy of The Force Unleashed, because my copy of the game is scratched in many places. I'm planning on going from there and playing my games back until the first one that I got for the Ps3 (which was Armored Core 4) and then doing the same process for the Ps2 (my 2nd to last game being Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then my very 1st being LEGO Star Wars.)

And then.....

I finished Portal for the first time just then. On the Xbox 360, not PC, my brother owns The Orange Box. I stopped playing halfway through a while back as I was getting so frustrated at it, but then I started it again and finished! Best video game ever. GLaDOS is now my favourite video game character. And the song at the end made it feel even better (even though I've seen it so many times on YouTube). Anyway, now on to Portal 2!

Since most people play video games nowadays, I was curious as to which ones were everyone's favorites, or which ones changed a person's outlook on a genre or the way games are made.

I tend to enjoy brighter palettes, like Pikmin and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.  Cave Story is also one of my favorite games, and I find Animal Crossing is a lot of fun too.

I tend not to like First-Person Shooter games very much, because most of them seem to be very much the same under the surface, but I enjoy playing multiplayer with my brothers sometimes.

Though it's the first time I've played it on my 3DS.  Before I played my GBA copy, but I pre-ordered my 3DS, so I got the free games from the price drop.  Totally worth it.

I just got Portal 2 and am loving it.  I think I'll finish it within the next couple days - I'm on Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You.  This is my main current obsession. ?
@DanielofRedwall: Did you know that the official Portal 2 soundtrack is available for free on the official site?  Here it is (http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php).

Getting close to the end of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - I'm on the third part of the Song of the Hero.

Also playing Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones on my 3DS.  Never played a Fire Emblem game before, but I'm loving it - I think I'm starting to like turn-based strategy games, I'd never really heard of them before getting this ipod game called Highborn.  It's taking me forever to finish, because I don't want any character to die - their death quotes make me feel like a bad person for letting them die. :<

I also have the Portal 2 soundtrack on my computer.  I need to figure out how to convert it into a format that will allow me to import it to iTunes, but I think I need an rar. file program, which are either expensive, or Eset says are buggy, so I'm kind of stuck.  :I
I can put them on my 3DS SD card and play them in the music app though, so I still benefit.  One of my favorites is the Turret Wife Serenade.

I've played both Portal and Portal 2, but my enthusiasm always seems to peter out before I finish.  ;_;

I suggest you try Advance Wars.  It's a bit different, since it's not an RPG, but I find it takes more forward-thinking than Fire Emblem.  In my opinion, Advance Wars 2 is the best incarnation if you can get ahold of a copy and still have one of the earlier generations of the DS or a GBA.

I'm finding Skyward Sword rather boring, actually.  It's still a fun game, but nothing makes it stand out against other LoZ games.  For the record, Wind Waker is my favorite in the series, followed by Twilight Princess, then Minish Cap, then OoT.

I've finished "Portal 2" just then, now for my complete analysis! I'll compare it to the original:
WARNING: SPOILERS!

GAMEPLAY
In terms of gameplay, "Portal 2" gets the cake here (see what I did there?). "Portal" was much shorter (you could complete it in an hour if you remember all the combinations) and there aren't as many hazards. "Portal 2" has much better gameplay. It's stacks longer and the new hazards and things to help you makes it a lot more fun.

STORYLINE
Again, "Portal 2" wins here. "Portal" doesn't really have much of a storyline, you just finish test while being led by a corrupt robot. At the end, you kill her. In "Portal 2", you are led by a personality core, following his instructions while trying to appear like nothing is happening in front of GLaDOS. Then, you put Wheatley in charge and he goes corrupt. You then have to help GLaDOS (who is a potato at the time!) get back in power. Yep, "Portal 2" wins.

CHARACTERS
Well, both games have pretty much the same characters, so it's hard to judge. "Portal 2" does have Wheatley, and I cracked up laughing at the Space Core. I guess "Portal 2" wins here.

Humour
"Portal" was much funnier and all-round quotable, in my opinion. GLaDOS was simply epic in that game. But there were still plenty of funny moments in "Portal 2", like Cave Johnson's ant about life giving you lemons.

CREDIT SONG
"Portal" wins here. "Still Alive" I found much funnier then "Want You Gone". Still, "Want You Gone" was good.

Verdict
While both games were awesome, I think "Portal 2" was the better of the two.

I've definitely had a lot of favorite videogames over the years. Here's the ones that stood out most for me (plus the systems I played them on), in the order I played them:

Jazz Jackrabbit (DOS) - I'm not much a fan of fast-paced platforming (only reason I tried Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was because Tails was in it), but I made an exception here because of Jazz, the green Rambo-like rabbit. Its enemies and worlds were just more appealing to me than other stuff out there.

Ecco the Dolphin (PC) - I may not be a fan of the hard difficulty (I keep it on Easy), but I love everything else about it. For whatever reason, my mind went wild at the thought of controlling a dolphin underwater. The visuals are good, the music is absolutely stunning, the cutscenes were awesome for the time. I've routinely called the Ecco soundtrack my favorite videogame soundtrack, it really is the kind of music I like best.

Wario Land II (Game Boy) - I love the Wario Land series for having diverse gameplay, but starting with the 2nd game I really came to appreciate the level design. Really, each level is more like a puzzle. That Wario can't die lends itself to the puzzle aspect. Every time I'd try to do something unexpected like leap left when it wants me to go right, I'd bump into a wall juuust tall enough. The level design forces me to get through the levels properly. Multiple paths through the game too. The 3rd game added the trick of giving you new abilities along the way so you can return to previous levels to get at a treasure chest that used to be out of reach. Still, the 2nd game is when I saw the potential the Wario Land series can have. Wario now seems synonymous with accessible, crazy, and addicting gameplay. I'd rather go with that than a Mario game, Wario just has more personality.

Secret of Mana (SNES) - My pick for favorite game overall. It's easy to just jump into with its unique battle system, I love the environments (because I really like forest areas), the music is soothing. What attracted me most of all was the dragon Flammie. Using a dragon as transportation (a cute one at that) just can't be beat. I'll admit that Chrono Trigger has a lot more to offer and I found that to be a better game, but my loyalty lies with SoM.

Star Fox (SNES) - It'd be several years before I became good enough at this game to get anywhere in it... and once I did, I welcomed the challenge. I always felt the first Star Fox had the best atmosphere, and I can appreciate the high challenge as being preferable to the easy challenge of Star Fox 64.

Pilotwings 64 (N64) - Everyone remembers their first time playing the first hang glider mission ("Albatross Nest"). It may be the only flight game I've played, but I can't imagine anything else topping it.

Wave Race 64 (N64) - Honestly I only play this for Dolphin Park. I could race alongside that dolphin for hours. That's the closest I remember ever being to gaming nirvana.

Star Fox Adventures (GameCube) - Some people don't care for it, but I loved it. Yeah, I bought it because of Fox McCloud. But the graphics are beautiful even today, it has a great soundtrack, has a refreshingly smooth framerate, and it's just fun to play. Has the same sort of feel that Beyond Good & Evil would have, which helps.

Beyond Good & Evil (GameCube) - Mostly it's for that feeling that the game understands how to keep things fun. There's no frustrating instant-death pits, you have unlimited lives, checkpoints are frequent, you can (almost) always go back to get something you missed, the framerate is silky smooth, and the stealth is thankfully not too involved. But this game did one thing extremely well, one thing I wish more games followed: It had a sidekick who would actually congratulate me on the stuff I do, make entertaining banter along the way, and help me accomplish tasks. Yep, I'm talking about Pey'j. It's a small thing to hear him cheering me on when I'm completing a really easy race, but that makes all the difference. Pey'j made the journey worthwhile, and I actually felt lonely when he had to leave for a while. He's the best sidekick I've ever had.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (GameCube) - I found this more entertaining than "Beyond Good & Evil" because of the Prince doing acrobatics and just making up a way to get from point A to point B. Had a sense of adventure. I also love seeing the country vista during the rare moments where I'm outside of the palace.

Okami (PS2) - There was a lot of drama near the end of 2006 because two games in the spotlight seemed so superficially similar: Zelda Twilight Princess had Wolf Link, and Okami had Amaterasu (and it can be argued that Okami is a little like Zelda). Well, I had to choose. I think I chose correctly. I had a lot of fun with this one, thanks to the huge areas and great music and variety of stuff to do. I used to just park Ammy somewhere at Taka Pass and listen to the music. When I came back, Ammy would be laid out on the ground sleeping. It's also a REALLY long game, the longest I've ever spent. Took me 70 hours.

Sly Cooper (PS2) - Can't express enough how lucky I feel to have played this game and its sequel (never tried the third though). It's just pure fun from start to finish. Sure, the first game can be completed in a measly 7 hours, but I've come to admire its style of platforming and light amount of stealth. And Sly's tail, which everyone remarks on for being particularly lively. The sequel took a while to get used to, but undoubtedly it's a more entertaining experience, especially when you have all three characters working together in a mission. My favorite thing is that the levels are so large and there's so many ways to get from point A to point B that I always feel like I'm carving my own path. And if I get spotted (which happens a lot since I'm clumsy with stealth), I can find an escape route on the fly. Makes it feel like I have more control.

Solatorobo (Nintendo DS) - This must be the only game where all my love for it is solely because of the main character, Red Savarin. The quests can be fun at times (it makes a lot of difference that the characters thank you when you finish tasks), and everyone agrees that the world is spectacular, but... there is a LOT of dialogue, and almost all battles can be won by slamming A over and over. So it's like an RPG in some ways. While it can get repetitive, I just keep coming back because of Red. I never seem to get tired of those facial expressions of his, or the cute French voice soundbites you sometimes hear over the dialogue. And as the game went on, I cared more about Red. He's a good character, and optimistic that he can accomplish anything. And I feel that too, that bravery of being able to see some huge towering monster and going "eh, I can take him." Although the gameplay could be better, I still liked it and hope there will be another game in the franchise one day.

I like alot of games, and I was surprised to hear that someone here likes Solatorobo because I have that game also.  The game systems that I have are an Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS and that is it.  Here are some of my games

Xbox 360: Both Batmans, Call of Duty 2 and 3, Skylanders and Halo
Nintendo Wii: Sonic and the Seven Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight
Nintendo 3DS: Solatorobo Red the Hunter, Star Fox 64 3D, Pokemon
and that is only some of them.

I'm going to spend a few weeks in Illinois helping out my grandparents after they have various surgeries, so I'm going to buy Cave Story 3D for the trip.  I'm excited, since Cave Story is one of my favorite games, but I haven't had the opportunity to play any version but the one released for the DSi.

You should try the original version for PC. That's how Cave Story should be played, in my opinion.

My brother preordered it from Amazon.com, and I chipped in some so that I could have the 3D Classics: Kid Icarus code that came with it.  I love the downloadable games, they so convenient.  =D

I think Uprising is cool, but I'm not going to buy my own copy.  Nintendo really played it up, but I knew all along that it wouldn't really be my sort of game.  In my opinion, it's a little too limited as far as the game itself goes.  I was hoping it would be a little more like Custom Robo (in which you can literally change everything about your fighter), but there aren't as many weapons as I had hoped, and you can't customize anything else.

Does anyone have the new Harvest Moon game???  I have for 3DS (it's also available for DS) and it's really fun.
I have so many games to play right now (I won a gift card---it pays to do surveys found at the bottom of receipts!) that's it hard to choose what to play sometimes!

Tale of Two Towns?
I haven't played that one.  The only Harvest Moon game I've played is Magical Melody for the Gamecube, and I liked it well enough.  Still, I don't think I'll end up buying it, since I figure it can't be too terribly different, and it's not really my sort of game.

Yep, it's Tale of Two Towns.  I'm sure that there are some differences, but the basics are the same...grow crops and raise animals!
One of the fun things with this one is that if you live in one town, your primary focus is growing crops.  If you live in the other town, it's primarily raising animals.  You can switch at the end of each season if you want.

I got 100% on Lego Star Wars for the Gamecube, but I've never played any of the others.
It was fun, if not overly simple.  Still, I wouldn't mind playing it again someday.  I found it was more fun if I played with someone else too, since it was easier to goof around with more than one person.  Your CPU partner is so boring.  :P

Tiny Tower is the hardest for me to put down on my iPod. Don't download that game, whatever you do. I can't help it, I must build more levels!

Go back one more to Morrowind ;) that'll run on practically any older machine, and has the best story and in-depth world.  Graphics are less good, but I think its better in terms of gameplay.

YeH, i'd definitely agree with the story, but the game itself is ehhh. They have LOADS of weapons, almost the most in the game, but what killed it for me is the gameplay mechanics, just eh. If you can stand absolutely atrocious sword play, and a few other mechanics, and you can get by the decent graphics, it's a nice romp through one of the regions of Thamriel. :) one thing I do really. Like is that you can provoke guards, and such, there's some great features, but they kinda get buried in the horseplop gameplay.

I own the first four! They never get old. I don't own a 3DS, and I don't want to, except to get the fifth one. I really wish they'd make a remix of the fifth for normal DS.

And it has to have some of the best music of all time.

No, Luke. Let him go! Luke, stop that - that's his face!

And has anyone ever played Spore? I used to have it, but it won't work on my computer anymore.

I know, I know.  I shall probably now be shunned for my ways.

But in all seriousness, I find it to be a well done adventure game that takes weeks to complete, has lots of side quests, some challenging boss battles, a decent story and a fun combat mechanism.  I could do without the bits you have to play in the Barbie-esque faerieland, but for the most part the game takes place in a medieval land and the knight character is fun to play and get new swords and armor for.  I enjoy it more than any other game I ever bought.  I got it on a whim with my brother for some laughs and we were both shocked by how much fun it was.

Well, I found out from Ocarina of Time that you can't use all of the horse slaps at one time lol.  You have to wait for your horse to slightly slow down after the speed boost before using another one.  You probably already knew that, but hey, it's advice.

Aye. Has anyone heard of/played Puzzle Quest? It's a fun game, a bit like bejeweled. There's seven different colours, red, green, yellow, and green, those are mana, you get that mana and use it to cast spells that do damage to your enemy, among other things. There's skulls, which do damage. Purple stars, which gives you experience points so you can learn more spells. And there's gold, which is self-explanatory.

This is a very Hectic look at the game... It hasn't gotten that crazy anytime I've played, but it sums up the game pretty well.

Fast paced, original, well constructed, and still Beta... Yep, this isn't the real game yet! But the real thing is still free, and all the things you earn in the Beta you keep for the real one when it comes out.

So there was a thread discussing PC games, I'll just continue it here.

Here's my favorite PC games:
- Portal / Portal 2
- Skyrim
- The Sims (I had the entire set of the original games, but only have the base game of The Sims 3)
- Rollercoaster Tycoon (original set)
- Zoo Tycoon (original set)

I'm playing Skyrim most right now.  I've completed most of the faction questlines; I only have the main quest and civil war quest to go.  I'm also currently trying to find all the words of the Shouts and find all the Stones of Barenziah (4 to go).

I'm bored, so I'm typing up a giant review of the best and most overlooked games I've played :D

Professor Layton
Games hardly get better than this, sword fighting one moment, sipping tea and solving puzzles the next. This is a great puzzle game with a creative storyline, it's sure to hook you, almost every puzzle is unique and leaves you thinking, and on top of all that, this game has some of the best music I have heard. AND there are several sequels. I'd highly recommend this to anyone.

Pikmin
You're a quarter-sized person commanding ants. Can it get cooler than that!? It has amazing gameplay, easy-to-use controls, brilliant storylines, is cheap because it's for GameCube, everything you could ask for in a game. With the second one, you can co-op with friends, I'd recommend trying that out. This is one of Nintendo's finest.

More to come later.

Ah, no, I'm fine with your opinion.  I used to feel that way myself.  I just got used to the game and got pretty good at it.  Though, personally, I enjoy Legend of Zelda games much more.  There's more of a story to them.
Lol, I was playing a Super Mario Bros. game the other day, and man, that doesn't have much of a story at all!  While Zelda takes about an hour of intro videos, Mario is two seconds of:  "It's Princess Peach's birthday today!  Oh look, she got kidnapped!"

Do you seriously have to bash SSBB though? Why post something so ridiculously negative without any real purpose? Now if you had gone after something like Mortal Kombat or what ever that stuff is things would make more sense. SSBB is NOT a go to for fighting game description.

Computer is better though because you can connect with other people on the internet.  Plus it has LOTRO.

You need not repeat something you've already stated, and prove this ridiculous theory. Everyone else just copied the Wii when it comes to movement technology.  :P It is way ahead of everyone else, and it is a lot more user friendly then any other system... except maybe a computer which is my personal favorite.

What is Fable about?  And what is this TA that Dan and SaberTruth are talking about?
Title: Re: The video game topic
Post by: SaberTruth on October 17, 2012, 05:59:46 AM
TA stands for "Tribes Ascend" which is a free, fast, first person shooter that is similar to Halo (only 100 times funner).
@ Dan: I don't get to play TA very much, but have been getting back into it more recently. I mainly play the "capture the flag" mode because I like being able to get the tanks. As to class, I just unlocked the "Brute" and have been loving his hard hitting gun. Before I got him I would run with the "Juggernaut" because I could use his secondary weapon really well. As to other unlocks, I am not really sure as I had been saving all my XP to unlock the brute, but now will be adding extra upgrades to him. I wish I could be on this Saturday, but I am leaving on vacation this week. So when I get back, I would really like to play with you.
Also, you might really like the free online game called "World of Tanks", it is one of my favorites.

Tribes ascend is a blast, but i have a few gripes:

It isn't single player. That means when multiplayer dies, where is someone gonna be with 50 real dollars of in-game gear?

Two. The non-explosive splash damage weapons are almost useless, as the players move more than quake in an anti-gravity server. XD

I mainly play Raider since I unlocked the grenade launcher (which is actually a really good weapon in this game) and am saving up for the plasma gun for him too.... so excited! I'm past 66,000 XP! I really loved the Brute too, his fractals are beast! The heavy spinfusor was just made for me, though I REALLY don't like the automatic shotgun... blech.

Yeah, Tribes Ascend COULD use a Single P, but it DOES have great multiplayer (better than COD MW or HALO [And I LOVE HALO!]) And as far as hit-scan weapons go, most people feel exactly the opposite, they feel it isn't Tribes like because Tribes has always revolved around hang-time predictions, nit predicting where someone's going to be in the next second. I'm getting the hang of them, so I'm starting to like 'em.

Speaking of AC4, a video I saw the other day... this channel has done "AC in real life" for each of the main games, where they parkour around a city wearing a costume from that game, but this AC4 one is the best - they did it at Comic-Con so you can see people's reactions and they do some really cool stuff.  It's impressive what you can do with your body if you're physically fit.

Well, if you watch the "making of" video, they do ask "Hey, can we do a flip over your car/table" and so on, and the guys that do the tricks in their videos do this sort of thing as a serious hobby and are therefore quite experienced (the last guy they had for these AC videos even ended up quitting his day job and doing stuntwork professionally full-time thanks to the fame he got from the first video alone), so I assume it's mostly okay.

Cool.  :)

Well, a few days ago, I killed (in a game) a giant war-walker ( which I thought were invincible), and in fact, I killed 3 of them. After I did so, a new door opened for me. It contained several new weapons, lots of med-kits, and lots of bombs. It even had a teleporter that shot me from level 3 to 5 ( skipping 4 completely) and as soon as I got to level 5, I accidentally dropped a nail bomb, and died.

So, pretty much, I don't think I've rage-quitted a game that badly since Majora's Mask. (I might explain that one later.)  ;D

So I was in Snowhead. Honestly, Majora's Mask is the hardest LoZ game, in my opinion, and one the eerier ones, for sure.

So, I had been struggling in Snowhead for a few weeks, and I was frustrated enough. I had about had it. Finally, I got in some progress, enough to where I got to the mini-boss; the Wizzrobe. I was on 3 hearts by the time I was finished with him. I progressed really far, and even got to the Wizzrobe's revenge, his second battle. So I killed him, and got the boss key.

I felt unstoppable. As I swaggered out the room in my chubby Goron body, my game had to ruin my day. It had the nerve, the gut, to freeze.

So I had to restart my Gamecube. As I opened up my file, I found myself... In clocktown... On day 1.

'Nuff said.

Ouch!  Lol, I can see why you'd quit.  ;)

Well, I decided to dust off my copy of Wind Waker today, and after playing it for an hour or so, I decided to let it gather some more dust.  I did a sort of rage-quit because I was almost to the boss in the Forbidden Fortress, when I got discovered by the guards.  No biggie, I tried again.  I almost got to the door (in the same room), when I was discovered by the guards.  Pretty annoying, but I figured I may as well try again.  Third time's the charm, right?  Wrong.  I got into the same room, again, and, again, got discovered by the guards.  After being thrown in the cell (I know pretty much every inch of that room now), I calmly saved and quit, then threw my remote on the ground and shut off the Wii.  No more Zelda for me today!

I've been dividing my time between Assassin's Creed 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Guild Wars 2.  Not that I've had much time for gaming lately, but yeah.  I also play a mobile card trading/battling game called Rage of Bahamut, am part of a team of about 30 people and am considered one of the team leaders.

For you people thinking about getting link between worlds, I'm going to rant on why not.

Well for starters, it's just Link to the past. That's right, the same game, but with a 2D
Mode! Why would you want to become 2D? The graphics are bad enough.
Same enemies, same places, same pixels, if you will. Same plot, same old LTTP.

In essence, buy A Link to the Past, not some stupid spin-off.

I've played it! I really like it, but it did have one of the things that killed every old game for me. The LAYOUT. ARRRGGG. It was just the mixture of samey textures that made it hard to navigate. I don't need something linear, but come on, it's impossible to move about effectively. :P

I have the gold edition for number two.... best version for play, but AoE 3 has way better building placement, reactive physics, and graphics plus more add-on features.

GRRRRRRRR! No one plays any of the stuff that I do.  ::) (SMITE, Tribes: Ascend, SupCom 2) Maybe I'll post some Drybear and _Star vids to get [hopefully] someone else hooked.  ::)

AoE, I love the second one for campaigns, but the third one beats the others with the graphics, trade, levels, etc.

1: I have a new computer
2: Steam has a security feature where you have to get email confirmation to log on with another computer
3: My email account is broken

I've played them all; from the first one to AoE 3. Which one I play depends on what mood I'm in (and what time period I'm studying in history).
The computer I'm using now has everything up to The Conquerers, but it wouldn't be able to play #3 at all. I have a terrible graphics card. However, one of our other computers does play it (somewhat) but it skips around when there are a lot of cannon fights.

What is guns of Icarus.

It's a Steampunk styled game where you and your crew( generally people you don't know) work together on an airship, which you arm with an arsenal of Guns ( hence the name ). You can choose from a wide array of Airships, each one with its own strengths and weaknesses.

There are three classes:
Pilot: You pilot the ship, pretty self explanitory
Gunner: Well, you fire the guns, and can choose from different kinds of ammo.
Engineer, or Engi: You use loadout of tools to repair the hull, balloon, engines, and guns.

Well, there you have it.

:D  So I finally convinced you to join Firefoot, eh?  I'd invite you to join my family's kin, but it was disbanded earlier this year due to my brother not wanting to lead anymore and no one was willing to take his place.

Lemme see...  Eldanna (level 52 elf warden), Alreenia (level 30 elf loremaster), Ellowynne (level 27 (I believe) human burglar), Sorrinn (level 11 dwarf runekeeper), and one other that I can't think of at the moment.  All on Firefoot, of course.  ;)

I've been hearing a lot of people talk about Lord of the Rings Online lately. What exactly do you do in the game?  Is it free-to-play?

Welllllp...... I killed Zant..... For the first time.... I wonder how many times you have to kill him. He seems a bit too easy though, I never dropped below half health (if even). How much is left to the game? Because I really want to finish all of the side quests, but I don't know how to get to the gold guy and I don't know if the bridge is back yet so I'm not sure whether stopping in those two places is worth my time yet.

Yes, it is an MMO, and has a free to play, which is what I do. It is based on the Lotr books, which means it has places such as the Old Forest and the Barrow Downs that aren't mentioned in the book. It is very fun, and I am really enjoying it.

@Dawn:  It's a great game.  Let's just say that.  You can play free to play, or, to get things like the gold cap unlocked and to get more areas, you could go VIP, but it isn't necessary.  You earn Turbine Points while playing, which allows you to buy things like the riding skill (which means you can ride horses, ponies, and goats), you can buy new areas, cosmetic gear, swift travel (pretty much that means teleporting from one area to another via horse stables.  You can ride there by normal travel, but that takes much longer.), etc.  It's a very fun, but slightly confusing (at first) game.

@Shadow:  I play mostly as Ellowynne and Sorrinn (well, at the moment), and have kinda left Eldanna somewhere in Moria.  I haven't touched Alreenia in ages, due to the fact that I played her with a friend, but we restarted 'cause we hated our characters.  And then I can't even remember my fifth character, which obviously tells ya that I don't play that 'un often.  ;)

Ah, yep, you definitely killed Zant then, 'cause you're doing the last temple (AKA Hyrule Castle).  Yeah, no worries, you don't have to fight Zant, you just have to fight an equally annoying boss.

@Norham:  I know!  I was cracking up at that part!  Lol, even though it was supposed to be dark and scary, it was like:  "Dude, you're dancing and humming, how scary can it be?"  :P

Doesn't Ganondorf just face you head on? Zant was annoying because you fight like, 10 different former bosses (in the form of Zant of course) in the fight.

Mmm, sort of.  You fight Ganondorf several times, and you're not actually fighting him at some points.  (Okay, okay, I'll admit, I've never actually fought him.  I've watched my brother fight him, though.  And I learned that in the final battle, when the two of you are dueling, if you pull out your fishing rod and swing it around, it distracts him.  It's awesome.  ;D)

I warn you- it's not Terraria. It looks very similar, and the early game is mostly the same, but its hugely different. Basically anything you come across us random within parameters- including weapons, worlds, monsters, ad villages. It's also infinite. And not at all like Terraria. I mean, spaceships and penguin bosses.

. . . about Starbound having problems.  I was saying I didn't know enough about it.  Truth be told, I was hoping it would serve as a replacement for Terraria: somehow Terraria didn't scratch the itch the way I expected it.  So what is the state of the game, and what ISN'T it doing?

(Hey, the forum is warning me about the thread being months old, so I hope The Skarzs didn't lead me astray (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?topic=177.msg357887#msg357887) . . . )

Starbound is a good game, and I have 350 hours in it- As opposed to my 263 in Terraria. Starbound somehow feels more... explorational... If that's a word. You're on a starship going to planets, tiering up, fighting procedurally generated monsters on procedurally generated planets. I've played through Terraria maybe 3-4 times, and I have no desire to do so again. Once Starbound is in a more complete state I will most likely spend a lot of time playing through again, and I will greatly enjoy that.

But it's unfinished.

Starbound is still in an early version of the game, and there hasn't been a stable update in many months. This is ridiculous. There has been PLENTY of time to add at least some of the promised features. But they have added some- Into the Nightly version of the game. It's unfinished, buggy, 'More beta than the more beta than beta.' But it's updated almost every night, at least several times a week. It is absolutely ridiculous to say that even with a small dev team there is no way the could output content faster than this- But at least it's not complete radio silence, work is being done. They haven't taken the money and run, they've taken the money and kind of slowed down. Nevertheless, I think that they should have tried to make their game more complete before releasing it. Early access is just a ridiculous model- It provides no incentive to finish games once people buy it.

Yes, it wasn't posted in since January, but since this was the most relevant topic for what you were talking about, that is why I recommended it.
While reviving old topics (other than in the Cellars) with just a sentence or two is looked down upon, if you have something worthwhile to say, it's fine.

So, who wants to talk about Starbound? I was going to get it, but I think I'll wait until it's out of beta (which, at this rate, looks like a long time from now)

I just did, on the last page. :P

That's interesting.

Lemme compare to Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves).  With that game, you know it's pointless to "wait until it's out of beta," since it will probably remain in alpha until the creator passes away.  But there the cosmic inevitability is all up front: it has a massive feature list and the creator can only implement bits one at a time.

In fact, when I first came across it, it was kinda surprising that people were playing half of it at all (the "Adventurer Mode").  Literally no goals had been programmed into the game other than killing stuff.  "Wow, what a complex and realistic world simulation!  So, uh, what's the game?"  Since then, more "point" has been programmed, and I can understand it a bit better.

Does Starbound have a problem with that?  Is there no "point," or has it failed to be up-front, or are essential "fun bits" still missing?  Or are people just holding it to different standards?

The problem with Starbound, from what I can tell, is that it was massively over-hyped. The devs set all these goals for the game, and released screenshots that made it look like the game was full of content. And then, beta came out. There was a lot of content in beta, to be fair, but many of the things in the game (like weapons, enemies, etc.) were very unbalanced. There were absurd enemies who could kill you with one hit, and some of the early bosses were near-unbeatable without cheating. The devs spent months patching up what was unbalanced (months that could have been spent adding new content) Personally, I think the devs should have, I don't know, played the game to see if it was balanced before they released it? (All this is gotten from reading various threads in the starbound forums and reviews and such)

Now most of the balance issues appear to have been smoothed out, but a lot of the promised content isn't done. For instance, none of the actual storyline has been added yet, and one of the races (the Hylotl) doesn't even have almost any content in the game.

I only started playing in Beta version Angry Koala (I think) but by then I didn't experience any balance issues- Yeah, things were hard, but I could beat just about anything with a full set of on-tier armor. Yeah, okay, I go into a sector that has creatures a tier above me, I get murdered. Of course, trying to combat things above your tier is dangerous. I didn't encounter anything that was in the same tier as me and could kill me easily. Boss monsters exist, as do intelligent, humanoid NPC's, and they're more powerful than the procedurally generated monsters. But they're not unbeatable if you're prepared with items that you're intended to fight them with. True, the Hylotl didn't and still don't have any dungeons or villages in the game, whereas every other race does, but by the point I started playing the game was playable to start to finish.

Starbound is intended to play one way- With missions to unlock major upgrades and such, but other than that things being obtained by exploration and travel. Currently, it has a series of placeholders- Bosses.

Intended earlygame progression:

Start off, go down to planet to collect minerals to repair ship's thrusters allowing interplanetary (but not interstellar) travel. Go to nearby 'Gateway' planet which has a teleporter to an 'Outpost,' which has a guy who wants you to run errands for him inside the same star system. He'll give you a personal life-support system to allow you to accept the Lunar Base mission, that'll give you necessary resources to unlock interstellar travel. Beyond that is unknown, but it's probably safe to assume progression will follow a similar pattern.

Current placeholder progression:

Mine a lot, make gear, make a beacon to summon a boss, kill boss, use boss's drop to get access to the next tier, or 'sector' and the next set of recipes. Go to planet, get new ores, repeat the whole thing again.

The way the game is now plays just fine- It's just lackluster compared to what is being implemented in the Nightly version. Much of the code for the content being added is there- In the nightly, you can do the lunar base mission (Unbalanced as it is,) you can upgrade your ship (but that requires cheats,) many of the features are implemented but not tied together. I think by the end of 2014 there'll be a major stable update that will have overhauled progression- Earlygame, at least.

It's ridiculous and frustrating how much time Chuckefish is taking, but I think there is yet hope. :P

Anyone ever hear about Overgrowth? It's an awesome fighting game involving rabbits beating each other senseless!  ;D

Thanks for the explanation of Starbound.  I think that makes more sense.  It sounds like they're a bit beyond their means in updating the game, but at least they have a clear plan for it.

And I've been following Overgrowth ever since the Humble Indie Bundle stuff started ('cause they were connected folks).  You can get a fraction of the ridiculousness by playing their earlier game, Lugaru.  Meanwhile, their dev logs have taught me a bunch of things about coding and game design!

I would highly recommend Starbound once it's in verson 1.0, (Or possibly something Koala) but until then it's probably best to not get at all excited or consider buying it.

I'd call them hares, but whatever.  :P There are cats too!... And mice... and dogs..... and wolves.... and a robot hare....am I forgetting any? I don't think so. Thing is, the hares are the only ones with epic jumping capabilities, so it's really the only good exploration type. If you're mad at an enemy you can't beat, then play the cat, wolf, or dog (or press f of course :P f solves all your problems). The CPU is ridiculously overpowered, once you get it to a high-enough level, he blocks everything, and one-hits you every single time, and you can't Judo-throw him at all. It's so stupid at that point... Mark's awesome.  ;D
